So i did the oil change on my r154 tranny, and i have a new problem. ever since I change the oil second gear grinds a lot. I don't understand why, it wasn't doing that before I changed it. I used red line 75w 90 synthetic gear oil GL5 with a half bottle of Lucas transmission fix. ( trying to get 1st gear and reverse to go in smoth). I'm sure i put plenty, it took over 3q and I can also smell the oil from the gear box ever since like if its burning or something. I don't know what to do please help:1zhelp:

If you used Red Line 75W-90 (vs 75W-90NS), you are using a gear oil that was meant for an LSD - the friction modifier in it's formulation will cause all kind of problems. Plus the synchro's in an R-154 do not like most GL5 gear oils.

You want to use Red Line MT-90.

Lucas is snake oil - the gears cause it to foam up and emulsify. You will never, ever catch me with a bottle of that crap. I highly suggest you dump that fill and put an oil that was meant to be used in the R-154.

Royal Purple 75w 90 here. ( I think it is 75 90, can't remember) Transmission shifts smooth as silk.

RP gear oil also contains the friction modifiers used in an LSD, therefore it too is not suited for a R-154 or W58. You can get away with it - for a while anyway - all depends on the condition of the tranny. Eventually you will have trouble with the synchro's - the friction modifier is too slippery for proper engagement.

O shit?! Really? What should I be using then? I always thought RedLine and RP where the top stuff for the R154. >< Hope I haven't fked up my transmission.

Red Line is the best IMO for either tranny - MT-90 for the higher HP cars (actually any Supra), MTL for your basic stock supra. The Ford gear oils (without the modifier) work well too.

I would change the RP out ASAP - it's fine for open differentials or a LSD.

Welp time to order some, it was my first choice but I found RP on the shelves.

Only thing to keep in mind is if the syncros are glazed it's going to take some time for it to come good again so be patient.

Take it from someone that's tried royal purple in his tranny...NO. It "feels" smoother, until you try to actually drive the car hard and then the tranny fights you. MT-90 and it actually shifts fast enough to keep up, even with my worn tranny...

ok so today I put 3.2q of redline MT 90, and drove the car around for a bit seam fine, and then it started to slightly grind 2nd again (sometimes). wtf. Now what, I dont know what to do please help, this is the first time i have this tranny i just did the 1j 5speed swap. Could it be my clutch not releasing completely because I also have trouble going into reverse, it grinds to (sometimes). its a new clutch (ACT 6puck) any ideas?

thanx all
