GE/GTE Same Alternator?

Hey all,

I haven't been able to keep my battery charged in my 89 with a swapped 7mGTE in it. When it's cold, the engine starts to misfire and then eventually dies. When I leave it overnight it won't start in the morning without a jump.

I'm using the alternator from my old engine (7MGE) which I know works fine. Will it work with my turbo engine or do I need a bigger one?

Could anything else be causing this?

Thanks for any info,
Alex

Thanks for the replies.

So assuming the alternator is good and works fine with the GTE, where should I start looking for this mysterious electrical leak?

Corroded Battery terminals, loose/bad battery cables, loose alt belt, bad battery....check those.

Checked all those already heh.

I replaced the battery and tightened everything down. Alt. belt is as tight as it should be.

Stumped. :runaway:

Depends on year/model. Some options did result in the same alternator across the GE and GTE.

That being said, they are totally interchangeable. 1988+ GTE's are all 80A, so those are the best alternators to get.

My 87 Turbo came with a 70 amp 7mge alternator but about your problem, I know you said that the alternator is in working condition but I would have it retested and also recheck your terminals on the anternator.

GTE alts have an 8mm + Post that wont fit in the NA harness 6mm hole.
(just a heads up)
