How many of you are running on a Toyota HG with ARP bolts or studs torqued down "correctly"? For how long/miles? What kind of mods if any? So far so good?

I'm in the process of resurrecting a gay blue GTE and have very limited funds. I only plan on upgrading the exhaust and using an N/A head since my gte head and cams are shot. Stock CT 26. I will use ARP bolts. These are drivers cars and that's what want to do with it, cruise and not race.

I read a lot of build threads and see one bhg after another even after fresh overhauls. Is it possible the gaskets are getting "squished" by too much torque? I don't want to end up like a lot of people here who've had to tear down their engine again after only a few miles due to bhg.

Anyway, would like to know how other similar set ups are doing and advice from those who have it.

I ran 16psi on a 57trim CT26, on a Felpro gasket + ARP studs.

#6 cylinder distorted, but did not leak.

Run a metal head gasket - there is a reason Toyota went to a MHG with the JZ series.

I have a good setup and its fairly inexpensive. I'd recommend first and formost a good machine job on block and head with a MHG and ARP equipment. Then get a K&N FIPK intake, BIC Divorced DP, test pipe, and like a Blitz NUR Catback or a HKS Dragger or a really nice BIC catback. A manual boost controller, I say this for cost and the fact you won't get boost creep, just set it whenever the weather changes drastically. I also have hardpipes, a BOV ,and a new Spearco FMIC. which will make it a bit more effecient.

Been running a Toyota OEM with ARP Studs here. 8.5psi with no problems.

For how many miles though just guessing?

Also. I hear and read that cometics are the most forgiving when it comes to sealing. Who sells those and are they about the same price as an OEM gasket?

at stock boost i dont think you have much to worrie about. i ran 10 on the stock gasket and bolts and eventually blew the hg only after i installed and tuned my map ecu

Hey Ken, I think the main reason for the BHGs was the lack of torque from the manufacturer to the head. So I would assume, just grab up a good stock HG and you should be fine, especially considering you are running stock boost, and the only modification will be the exhaust.

I recently did an engine using a stock gasket and studs torqued to 80. Probably has only about 800 miles on it by now but I expect zero problems. My car has 40K since rebuild. From what I've seen the main reason for repeat BHG is either shoddy work by inexperienced people or pushing the engine hard with bad tuning. Many here also seem to forgo maintenance. Avoid all that and they'll be very little chance of a repeat.

3 weeks after the BHG deal i got into a race on the freeway and and got to 150 mph. i push my motor often and this is my DD. its holding fine right now.no leaks anywhere. coolent is still there.

I don't want to say I won't drive hard, but I'm beginning to get a little more comfortable with just using a Toyota HG. I will be buying some ARP headbolts here soon from the guy I bought the car from. He never used them. It really all depends on the money situation. I don't think I will have very much left at all after I get a shortblock overhaul, head resurfaced, probably a turbo rebuild, gaskets and pumps. Then I have to take into account all the oops along the way and all the other expenses yet to be determined. Oh! And hoses too, geez. The turbo has a little shaft play so I'm thinking to just get it rebuilt while it's off.
