go through and CLEAN everything... check everything.. when the engine is out, it provides a great time to get to things otherwise not reachable with the engine is in.

thanks for the advice, im goin to the dodge dealer tomorrow to see if i can grab some Combustion Chamber Cleaner to clean the pistons up some before i rip everything apart. I was planning on replacing all the hoses anyway because most of them were dried to the point the just cracked when i took them off. Any suggestions on where i can get some replacement hoses for cheap money? i can checkthe local auto parts store but around here they;re not too knowledgable about cars as all and they'll hire damn near anyone who can speak english, and some that cant.

remember when you substitute toyota pistons for cheap aftermarket they may not have the same composition and may not hold the same power. ask around see if anyone had used those pistons before in our motors. read what this poster is saying here ill quote it for you

buy from someone who at least knows what they are selling


i would recommend buying your engine parts local so that way when there is a problem your not shipping a set of bearings off because they are out of tolerance. you can just run back to the machinist or parts house and get some more.

for bearings ive never heard of those and unless someone has some good experiences to speak of id advise to stay with what works Clevite 77 bearings have been used for many many years here in the states.

have you checked price on toyota stuff from one of the discount dealers online it may be worth the few more dollars.

are you staying stock bore pistons? or going .020?

if your getting over sized then you should provide the pistons numbered to bore each cylinder to each piston so the tolerances don't fluctuate from 1-6

in some cases with cheap pistons they may run smaller or larger then toyota and actually not work with your stock bore or fresh .020 bore if they were not checked ahead of time.

some similar issues ive seen in the bearings side of things tolerances can vary from each unit

thanks for the advice guys, ill be staying away from these but i really dont wanna spend too much on the motor, maybe ill just wait till the motor comes out before i decide if i need new pistons.
also how necessary is it to change the oil pump?

well ill put it this way, what is the most important part of your engine? the one thing it cannot live without as far as bearings go no oil = you building another motor

things to not cheap out on pistons, engine bearings, oil pump, water pump, head gasket, timing belt, fuel injectors, oil filters and brakes.

i could see not changing the oil pump if you knew its history or ona car within 2-3 years of being manufactured but not something as old as a supra.

Nice post, pay attention to this guy! Just dont forget about hardware and rods. IMO I wouldnt cheap out on anything when it comes to the motor, unless youre going for HP and not reliability, but my supra is a daily driver, so reliability is a necessity.

thanks for the kind words, i just remember when i was in these shoes and made all these mistakes myself and having a mechanic father standing over your shoulder telling you i told you to replace that see what you have to do now?

another hint for saving some money alot of auto parts stores give discounts to their customers (business's) employee's my dad works for a trucking company who has a napa account and get some stuff 50% off just for working there. they dont ask for proof of employment either. just make sure you always pay the sales tax as to not mess with the companies account and taxes.

remember while the motor is out replace old hoses heater, radiator etc.

hmm, im gonna have to talk to a couple friends of mine and see if i can get some discounts.
im still gonna get the ebay gasket kit so i can have all the gaskets i need (cept the MHG which ill get).
hoses are getting all replaced.
