Hey all, rebuilding my GE and I've read in Adjuster's 7M assembly tips thread to use Permatex's 'The Right Stuff' gasket maker http://permatex.com/products/Automo...uto_Permatex_the_Right_Stuff_Gasket_Maker.htm . I went out and bought a can ($14 for a 4 oz can) but also have some Permatex Ultra Black that I used a little while ago. If I remember right, it was around $9 for a 10 oz can http://permatex.com/products/Automo..._Oil_Resistance_RTV_Silicone_Gasket_Maker.htm .

I've also got a tube of FIPG in the mail, but which is better, the 'right stuff' or the black rtv (max oil resistance it says)?

I think "The Right Stuff" tends to tack better and it sets a LOT quicker. I use it in situations where I can't wait too long for it to cure or in situations where I need to know it'll stay put
(like when I had to pull my lower timing plate with the head on).

In most situations I just stick with black or copper high temp RTV though. Cheaper and as long as the surface is prepped well (clean!) they work just as well.

Funny side note. Ever mix the black, red, and gray RTV silicone gasket maker together???

If you wanna try this I suggest you go outside when you do it, or at least make sure you have plenty of ventilation.

"the right stuff" is better, in almost every situation. the only place I wouldn't use it would be hot parts, such as the exhaust.

That being said, I've had good luck with all of permatex's FIPG products.

I purchased a can of "the right stuff" just because I heard so many people on the forums recommending it. I had to fix a few leaks and it's sealed them shut nicely!

I've always found Toyota's FIPG to be MUCH better quality all around than any Permatex RTV sealer.

I haven't tried The Right Stuff yet, though.

The smelly RTV stuff from Permatex is literally the same shit from the 60s. The new stuff (Ultra series; Ultra black, copper, grey, etc.) is far better, better than actual precut gaskets, and is used OEM on pretty much every car manufacturer. They only make the old stuff because people still buy it instead of the Ultra series.

Japanese RTV it's used by just about every big manufacturer ie: SuzukiBond, HondaBond and so on.

I've tried many different RTV's including Toyota's FIPG and this stuff beats em all hands down.

Haven't tried any of the Loctite anerobics though.
(they eat some plastics)

I've had a representative from Permatex come down and show off the Ultra series to my class. Ultra doesnt corrode or hurt anything.
http://www.permatex.com/resource_auto_prodselect.htm
http://www.permatex.com/resource_auto_lit.htm

Note that Ultra grey is specified for imports because they assume we use more aluminum. Its a tad more flexible than black when it sets, but is otherwise the same.

The links are for people who arent lazy and are curious as to what is applicable. Good info there.
