Gaaaah, help! KS/Starter woes...

Alright, I'm a dumbass. When attempting to remove the rear KS on my car, I noticed that the end of the starter was blocking my attempt. Instead of taking the entire starter loose like I should have, I removed the two long bolts through the end cap and pulled on the cap itself, loosening the cap from the field coil and the field coil from the main housing. This gave me enough leeway to get the job done, but, long story short, none of the pieces (cap/coil/housing) want to fit back together.

Inner parts not lining up? Am I missing something simple? Should I remove the starter to fix this, or can I leave it on? I'm supposed to deliver this car to a buyer in the next week: am I totally f*cked?

Thanks for the link to the TSRM. I've got a PDF repair manual, but the scans are much lower quality. I'll get a fresh start on the project in the morning; maybe it'll look better then.

Oh, and supraman, thanks for the offer on the starter; the one I've got was working fine last I checked, but it's just in the way. I'll look you up if it gives me problems, though.

Not totally F'ed, but you will be better off pulling the rest off and reassembling it on a bench. It is hard to line up the pieces when you cant see what you are doing.

Harder than removing the starter? I hear that's a beotch.

What I could really use is another starter to inspect (or, at least, a better diagram of one) and figure out what pieces are binding.

i hate to break this to you, but you can insert, and remove that KS plug with the starter in place.

my knock sensors where rewired which made it imposible to remove the rear knock sensor with the starter in place. so instead of totally removing the starter or pulling it to pieces. i just loosened it until it dropped out of the way enough.

it would be easier now to pull the starter and work where you can see. gl

Yeah, the starter's now in the process of coming off: the only thing left is finding a way to put a wrench on the nut of the (@#?!*%!) top mounting bolt.

I wish I didn't have to, but I'm selling to put money toward school and get rid of a few of my hobbies (supra, bikes, guitars) at the same time. Why is it that the fun hobbies are so f*cking expensive, anyway?

I finally got the top bolt and starter off just now: didn't even have to use extensions. Both of us somehow blessed with greasy ninja hands, my buddy was able to put an open end wrench on the engine side of the bolt whilst I snuck up the trans side with a ratchet-wrench. My buddy held the bolt, I took the nut loose and pushed the assembly up, and my buddy took the wiring loose. Bam, the starter practically fell into my lap. Now it's time for reassembly of the starter, possibly a KS rewire, and then re-installation.

Oh, and thanks for the good wishes; I hope the new owner will have a little more time for it than I've had in the past.
