While replacing fwd crank seal I tried pressing it in by hand. 2 times it cocked. The previous owner had a top and bottom end rebuild but the crank seal leaked. They had bought it from someone who got a Jiffy-lube oil change, but JL forgot to put oil in it. So, anyway, with an inspection mirror I saw there was a slightly raised area about 3/16" from the bottom of the recessed area. I pressed the seal in with the pully bacwards followed by the harmoinic ballancer using a 2X4 toleverage it in there. The seal (Timkin) was not flush, about 3/16 sticking out, but was even all around. Is this right or should I dress it down with progressively finer emory cloth? I cant find any exploded enginering drawing on this issue.
Thanx,
Dickie

Don't do anything to it! It's supposed to be a force fit. It's imperative to put it in square, and all the way in. Find a socket, or something else, round, even, and strong. It must fit on the outside edge of the seal perfectly. Do not use anything that doesn't fit right, or you will damage the seal. Also, check the crank pulley, where it enters the seal for a groove. if it has a grove in it, you must repair or replace it. They make sleeves for this purpose.

Thank-you. I'll drive it around for a while and add oil,as it only has 450 miles on the rebuild. Its gonna be 105 degrees here in Austin here today. Happy Independance Day everyone. I'll wait for the next cold front like we had last week, mid 90's.

Just make sure that you keep the oil up. Don't get lazy, like my stepsons, and blow up your engine.:nono:
