Futons....good or bad?

I've been thinking about getting a futon. Right now I have a bed and a couch in my room and I'd LOVE to have more space.

Are futons comfy? Do they cause any issues with the body like backaches or are they bad for your back?

I was thinking I'd get rid of my bed and couch, replace them with a futon, and save space for my musical instruments. Right now I have a drumset, guitar and related stuff...entertainment center...etc... and my room is getting cramped.

Give me your thoughts...opinions from those who have actually tried or do sleep on a futon for extended time periods are preferred. :)

My friend has one with a tempurpedic foam matress...

OH and I'm at or just about 6 feet tall, so I'm not sure if the length of common futons is an issue or not...

I used to have a bunk bed set up that had a futon on the bottom... I slept on it for about 3 years... I would say it doesn't help your back, but not sure that it would hurt it. I got rid of it because... the futon mattress was getting really thin in the middle, plus I wanted a 'real bed'

You could go for a setup like that, IIRC it wasn't very exspensive and you could get a nice quality mattress for up top.

My $.02.

I slept on a futon for my junior and senior year of high school and through most of college. If you don't skimp on one when you buy it they can be pretty comfy. However, if you buy one that comes with a cheap mattress, you may be feeling those support bars on your back/sides/stomach all night... every night.

Also, make sure you either get one that you can take the mattress cover off to wash, or make sure you put a blanket or some sheets over the mattress and clean them religiously or it'll begin to REEK after awhile.

I slept on a futon for a couple years after my wife and I seperated. Its all about the mattress. If you get a really good memory foam mattress and the bed itself is long enough for a 6 footer then go for it. Todays modern beds dont use a "box spring" much anymore and are really nothing more than a solid box anyway (They call it a "foundation" now). All the comfort comes from the mattress itself.

Using sheets on it or getting a cover for the mattress is alsoa good idea. Otherwise its gonna get skanky real fast.

keep the bed and couch setup. futons suck. i haven't seen one yet that would give good support or a good nights sleep yet.

plus when its a couch where do you think all your buddies will fart?....

We were broke and slept on a futon for the first couple months of our marriage. Then we used a blow-up mattress. Then I had some extra money after a deployment and we bought a king-size bed and box-spring/mattress set. We've been sleeping on that for awhile now.
I tried sleeping on that futon these years later and it's a pain in the butt. It creaks and makes noises with any little movement. After a real bed, I would rather sleep on the floor than on my old futon.

Yup. still do. I'll answer the next for kicks.

Not for a while no.

heh...yeah the idea of sleeping on a futon did seem silly to me at first, especially in a relationship standpoint so i decided to ask.

and what the hell good is a box spring? its a box...full of springs. I mean aside from providing some extra bounce when you...want to bounce up and down :sarcasm: is there any benefit? lol

haha...exactly. those are pretty convincing reasons not to get one...

Also convincing, thanks.

Thanks for all your thoughts everybody, reading them all it seems to be the best idea I stick with my bed and couch. My bed is pretty nice..i think i might get rid of my desk or something. something has to go though.

hell maybe i'll get rid of the couch and just keep some beanbags handy...

hmmmmm or two nice comfy chairs...

how big is your bed and how high is your ceiling? For very little cost you could build a platform for your bed that is high enough to put your desk underneath it. When I was in college and sharing a room with a guy thats what we did.

twin bed and high ceiling. that's actually a cool idea, but i'm not sure if i'd like climbing up to bed so often. I often find myself forgetting something little or having to get up...and that would stink.

BUT its a good idea, i'll keep it in mind :)

doesnt have to be that high, not so high you can stand under, just high enough to sit under. About 4.5 to 5 ft works. If you are the kind of person that like to "roll outta bed" its NOT a good idea, lol

Just make sure its long enough, make sure you consider if you sleep with you arms up (as in makes you "taller") for length or you'll have feet hanging off the bed like me unless you sleep at an angle.

Box spings actually aren't springs depending on the manufacturer. I happen to work in the bedding industry so I hear these kinds of things day in and out. Box springs are designed to increase the life of a mattress by taking up the majority of the person's weight sleeping on the bed.

It does depend on the MFG on the style and type of box spring. Sealy's have a "working foundation" (they actually have some spring to them). Simmons uses a different design because it uses a different style coil but has the same amount of steel in it as the Sealy. Tempurpedic's need a firm foundation that supports the bed evenly once sold one to a couple that was putting it on a slat package bed w/o the box and the bed began to "wave" as the mattress began to conform to the slats).

Bottom line not buying a set of boxes for a king set (2 boxes so usually the most expensive) will "save" you between 100 and 400 depending on the materials and design of the box.

ps. the dimensions of a standard futon are the same as a "full" or "double" bed.

I've had one for three years now. Only paid like $100 for it and I sleep pretty good... Then again, I can sleep on rocky ass cold dirt and be fine lol

As said, they get creaky and noisy, and there is definitely no chance of having sex on one, at least in bed form. Mine locks into couch form, that might work out, dunno.
