OK, so I posted this on SF already, and some of you have seen it, but I thought I'd put it up here too for your enjoyment. It's just too funny to not share! Here's my story:
I got my 1989 Turbo Supra on a swap for my 1990 Honda CRX. The CRX is pretty well modded, engine swapped, LSD, full suspension, setup for autox mainly. It's a cool little car, and it was a fun project. Needless to say, it was a no-brainer to swap for the supra! (in my mind anyway) Well, last week I got a funny letter from the State Police saying that it had been impounded, and that I was the listed owner/title holder. It turns out that the punk I traded with never bothered to title the car, or to get the plates changed, so it's still technically mine. On the 13th of March it was picked up off the freeway about 100 miles from here with a flat tire, and parked dangerously on the left side of the freeway.
Sooo, I went and got it from impound Saturday. I called the kid several times, but he hasn't answered or returned my calls. I figure, worst case scenario, I foot the bill for the impound and make him pay me a few hundred on top of that for my trouble. Best case, he disappears, I apply for a new title, since it was still in the car, and the car becomes mine again. If that happens, I'm just gonna sell it and put some $$ towards the soop! Anyone have any experiences like that, or know if there are laws that deal with this situation? Here in Kentucky, the car gets auctioned and the title goes back to the state after 60 days of impound. I figure on the 61st day it becomes mine, and that I "bought" it for the impound fees. I'm not gonna try to screw the kid, but so far he's left it in impound for over 2 weeks. He knows where I live, he's been to my house, my address and phone number are on the old title, so even if he lost my number or something, he should be able to find me. I sure would be if it was my car in impound. I don't get it.
Days later, it still baffles me that this dude wouldn't want his car back. On the other hand, I bet he thinks he would be in trouble if he came forward. I bet he never even insured the stupid thing, which pisses me off. If he had been in an accident or something, the liability would have come back on me. I guaran-freekin-tee you he wouldn't have any problem letting me take a fall. People are punks and it makes me wanna bash a skull or two.
