Last week I needed my new Moog lower ball joints installed, so I thought I'd try a shop here in Oceanside called bla bla. As I was standing around I heard him tell someone on the phone he needed the thickest oil he could find since Bimmers have loose tolerances. I thought to myself this was odd, so after he hung up, I asked him if he'd ever used GC 0W-30, he replied back that with Bimmers you want a little thicker oil. I mentioned to him 0W-30 means it’s 30W when hot and 0W during startup where there’s much wear to an engine. I don’t think he was too happy with that. So they finished the job, great work then I went on my way. Today I stop by the same shop with my 89 Supra N/A which Driftmotion just finished rebuilding my motor. I had about 1500 miles so I wanted to switch to GC 0W-30, so they take the car back, then come back out tell me they're going to have to add a disclaimer to the receipt due to this oil is not to spec. They said my engine tolerances aren’t tight enough to be using this thin oil. Then the mechanic comes out, they both get on the computer for who knows what for a while, then the mechanic goes back out to the shop. After about 15 mins my car is done, and they don’t need to add a disclaimer after all. Sheesh it sucks not having a place to change your own oil.

really, find a new shop. depending on the year of the bmw (IIRC, they changed in 2001 or so), bmw recommends 0w-30 in their newer cars! i use 5w-30 in my 88 E30 325. loose tolerances my backside, german engineering is precise.
