So I'm kinda on the fence. I bought an 89 supra 4 months ago. Been working on it here and there where I can to fix little issues between my kitchen reno. Now inicially I thought it was my turbo seal leaking so swapped turbos and seen to have the same issue with excess amount of oil in my oil filter. Just put in a catch can last night to see if it's comming from my valves. I was thinking of redoing the head(valves, springs, port and polish) the works but! The owner before me rebuilt the engine with je forged pistons, 2mm head gasket and such, then he used the original rods. My goals with a new turbo are 550-600 hp(supporting mods of course) so if I go that far do I tear down the block and replace the rods? Wouldnt they end up being the weakest link? Just don't want to go half way to find out later I'll be doing it again... Thanks

Oil in your air filter you mean? Do a compression test and be prepared to join the local "one low cylinder" team, currently inhabited by me. Chances are, if you are blowing by a ton of oil, your head isn't the culprit, its your rings. My motor has the exact same symptoms. By any chance, does your car idle like crap at near-stoich AFRs? Mine misses unless I'm idling at 12:1.

Maybe we can get a group buy on bottom end rebuilds locally...

I'll second the compression test.

As for the rods, as long as they are in good shape, they can take at least 600 hp. Unless your shortblock has issues, I'd leave 'em. If you have to tear the block down anyway, and you have the spare coin for rods, then why not?

Hmm... Was hoping the rings would be good after he rebuilt it! Haha, compression test this weekend it is! And if so full rebuild time! At least I can make sure it's right. And I second a group rebuild discount. My garage is kinda small to be rippin out my engine to rebuild....

Well, unless you have leaking valves, leaking valve stem seals, and excessive valve guide clearances, it likely isn't your head.

I'm saving my rebuild for winter....the car runs ok as long as I richen up the idle. It boosts just fine as well, though I'm waiting for my catch can to go above 10 psi as I'm seeing detonation at 14 psi and its likely related to all the oil mist I'm ingesting.

If you're lucky, you might be in the same boat.

Yeah it still boosts fine and runs. Just hate losing oil... Yeah I'll be doing the same thus winter. I still haven't put my Ems in either. So If my rings are toast I'll pull the engine do the bottom and top end, new turbo,QSV, bigger injectors, fuel rail, change the fuel pump(walbro is kinda loud) new clutch and a few odds and ends I guess... Paint may have to wait till next year :-(

Lol, you should see the size of the oil stain in my garage right now...good thing my oil system holds 8L...

Do you have the stock PCV line going to your throttle body, or just lines from the valve covers to the intake tube (thats what I went to and it made the oil problem 100% worse...no more smoke out the tailpipe though)?

(have I met you by any chance?)

Haha, straight to the intake. Just removed it last night and put it just in the catch can so I can stop cleaning out my intake! After all this really considering a 2j swap

I considered 2JZ, than reconsidered when I totalled up how much money I have into the 7m (FFIM, T4 turbo/kit, custom oil pan, AEM, etc)

Yeah I'll to crunch some numbers to see how much a 2j swap with single turbo will cost me compared to the 7m rebuild. I can always just sell stuff off my car that I won't be using anymore
