Cool, I guess I just never let it get THAT low then (although the needle is usually below empty when I get gas). :p

But yeah, I don't go out of my way to drive it when it's low, but I don't go out of my way to stop right when the light comes on either.

The tank is 18.5, but with the pump, you will never get 18.5 in there. And you shouldn't try either. You want the expansion volume to be empty.

On the subject of the tank, don't try to milk every last drop in the tank, for the reason I just stated.

I've never filled mine completely up like nick has stated, for that reason and 1/2 tank can get me around. Gas weighs something too, so a full tank is adding a decent amount of unneeded weight.

Not trying to threadjack, but on a similar subject... When I fill my tank, I usually just hold the trigger 'till it naturally clicks off, as MOST people do...

But... WHENEVER I fill my tank using that method, I ALWAYS get overflow (a tad of gas spills out the top)... This has been at several gas stations, so it's not faulty equipment at one... I've NEVER had this issue with any other vehicle I've owned... Is there something with the way the gas filler is angled or plumbed? Anyone else have this issue?

Its not good to fill it all the way up, read what nick wrote, Gas is a gas/liquid, it does expand and it needs the space to expand, and more weight.

I wouldn't if I were you, since the answer of 2-3 gallons should be adequate enough. Mostly because you don't want any of the particles of whatever is in at the bottom of the tank to get shot through your injectors.

This is false. The particles in your gas tank do not sit on the bottom of your tank, they float around. Plus, where do think the fuel pump is???

When the gas light comes on get your ass to the gas station and put fuel it in! ;) You don't want to overheat your fuel pump when there's not enough fuel in there to cool it...

exactly, do not over work your fuel pump, you don't want the chance of an empty tank with gas moving around and all of a sudden you get air in the lines.

True and false. The pump is low, but not at the bottom. The tank is 18.5g,'s, but you run out (car dies) at about 16.5g's. Toyota hung the pump up a bit to keep it from picking up any heavy sediment from the bottom of the tank, but some of that junk still sloshes around.... The stuff that that floats around, will most likely not make if through the pump sock.

Once it's all said and done though, I cant agree more with you in that if or when the light comes on, get you ass to the gas station and fill up.

Me personally, I cant remember the last time I saw mine come on, but then again, I never really let it get much below a 1/4 tank mark on the gauge.

I come from a land down under
I used to get 50 KM's/30 miles once the light was on before it ran dry.
(it comes on dim then gets brighter as noted)

I used to run a dual fuel system in my car so tested this many times as I could switch to the second tank and continue to a gas station.

you have a venting issue somewhere, I never have issues with the pump shutting itself off when it should...
