They probably quoted you a new harmonic balancer for $500. You need the lower timing gear- it should be much cheaper.

I'm gonna "lecture" the parts dep tomorrow. They can't be misleading ppl like that. Especially because I needed this part tommorrow and now they're closed meaning I won't get it till monday.
I specifically said pulley, not balancer.... wtf. The dude's in his 60's how can he not know the difference between a pot and a pan. I gave him respect by not making him recheck and acknowledging its "one of those parts toyota fucks people over with".

I don't think they meant to be misleading, I'm sure my parts guys would give you the same quote if you asked them for a crank pulley. Most people refer to it as the crank pulley and not the harmonic balancer.
You just need to specify that you need the lower timing belt gear. Again, its proper name would be a pulley, but most would refer to it as a gear instead.
There are a ton of these not-so-proper naming issues, but nobody ever changes and it's not a isolated problem. Names are hard for them, part numbers are easy for them.
That said, I'd suggest you show up with poodles' part number in hand to cross-referance it before you order it up.

True but even when I brought in 3 part #'s it took 15 mins for the guy to find it and I had to point it out for him even thought it was highlisghted with the original # I gave him.toyotanos;1425531 said:

Funny story, when I needed this part I didn't have the part number either, I was working that day so I had my dad call. Price seemed right and everything.... they ordered the oil pump drive gear :: facepalm ::

Even when I supply the #'s they take 3x the time i would and i see them pass the right category they should have clicked at least twice. Then I end up guiding them through it with my finger anyways...
Understood there's many models of cars but that doesn't remotely come close to any excuse of mismatching general car parts.
