Front clip or just motor

I'm thinking that I'm really going to go 1jz motor. Just wondering if I should buy a front clip. Or if I should just buy a motor with a harness. I just want to know if there is anything that I really need besides a motor and harness. Let me know. I've been reseaching but there is just so much information and junk to go through.

You're going to at least need a map sensor, ignitor, and ECU. If you want to use the hydrofan then you need the fan setup, thermistor, and the ECU for that. If not be prepared to get parts for a mechanical conversion or an e-fan and a cooler to stop the water pump from wearing out.

Personally, I asked an importer to just pull a list of parts from the clip rather than deal with transporting the whole clip around. The engine set is cheaper, just make sure you get enough parts that it's worth the lower cost. Trying to find some of the parts after the fact is costly and hard.

Cost is comparable so I vote clip. However I do think a clip is kind of a pain in the rear to pull everything out. Off the top of my head you need...

Complete motorset - $550
Bellhousing - $350
Flywheel - $300
Igniter, - $100- $150
ECU - $250-$400
Map sensor - $100
Fan set up (screw hydro) - $300
Throttle Cable - $65
Power steering line - $65
Radiator hoses - $20-$120

With that I think that you should be good. Most stuff can be found thru 935 Motorsports, or any of the vendors that deal with jz swaps.

A clip pretty much guarantees that you will be getting everything you need, and you have less of a chance of getting screwed. Also, you will know how many miles are on the engine and transmission.

I've also heard people can find some real goodies in clips that are next to impossible to get with engine sets alone (Tuned ECU, Short Shifters, etc.) :naughty:

That is a dream nowadays, especially if you have someone else do the job....

a clip is definitely the way to go. It comes with a bunch of parts that you will need for the swap that will be hard to come by if you buy a motorset. Its a bitch to get the engine out of the clip, but it is well worth it!! And you never know what kind of goodies you will get with the clip!!!:naughty:

Yeah the way that I was figuring it. A clip should be about $1000 more than just the motor. Most of that is just in the shipping though. I am hoping that I will be able to sell some of the parts off the clip to offset the price. Also when I pull the motor out of the clip I will know how it should go back into my car.

So what kind of experiances do people have with buying clips. Let me know what company to go through. Also where do you send your wiring whips. I was talking to Dr. Tweak about doing the swap, but it's way to far away for me, but I know that he does wiring whips.

I think it is unanimous the clip is the way to go. I got one because I wanted all of the intercooler parts and the sensors and stuff that I didnt have. Plus if you want to go that route you can use the crossmember if you have a pre 89. its a pain to swap but when you have the whole clip might as well.

It's not TOO hard to put together a non-clip 1J swap these days. But if I were doing it, I'd do it the old fashioned way with a clip to get all the fan, IC, resevoirs, brackets, and electronic parts.

I love the 1J but if I were going to go through the hassle of putting together a non-clip swap in a Supra, I'd probably just go 2J. The effort to put everything together would be pretty close. Non-clip JZ swaps are a lot easier if you've already done a JZ swap before and are familiar with the engine, parts, where to find parts, and where you can save money.

A clip is going to cost roughly the same as buying at all a la carte. Do the math in my post above. It adds up to about $2200. I hope you're not paying much more than that for a clip. There's one in the for sale section right now for $2500. :dunno:

Edit: $2357 -- http://www.supramania.com/forums/showthread.php?t=57853

Yeah I meant with shipping it might be about $1000 more. But i guess it probably isn't cheap to just ship a motor either. Does anybody like the 1.5 jz because thats what I was thinking about doing later on.

If you're thinking about 1.5JZ, just go 2JZ now up front. No need to reinvent the wheel IMO, unless you have a reason to. Like already having a 1JZ with turbo ugprade, cams, headwork, etc, then blowing it up.

Of if you think you just really want to explore the limits of the 1JZ knowing you're going to upgrade to 3L later on.

If you're starting from scratch, Toyota already made a 3L JZ block readily available. :)

I got my motorset shipped for just around 2k (JHot BTW). I was missing the hydrofan stuff (was going e-fan anyway) and a few other little things that were easily attained or adaptable from my old 7m.

www.jhotimport.com is the site. They should have a clip or 2 in stock.

The easiest way to do a 2jz swap is to send the harness out for modification, I'de go to Dr. Tweak of Pheonix Tuning (in the misc vendors section). Within 2 weeks, your harness is back from him and ready to go. If you get an aristo motor, you will need to swap the oil pans, baffle and pickup. If you keep the twins, you will have to bang the firewall back a little bit.

Good luck on whatever you choose.

Thanks for the info. I will probably just stick to 1jz. I love high reving motors. I drove hondas before my supra and had pulleys and lightweight flywheel. Reved pretty close to a bike, but only up to 7200 rpms.

I checked the site they just had an engine, no front clip. And I'm going to go with the clip, because everyone agree's that is the best way.
