Well I've owned my 88 supra for about 7-8 months now and the only person that I know that has been able to help with the car happens to be a friend of mine that is Z guy. He is constantly busting my balls about owning a supra. Saying that it is a better car motor etc.. He has completely rebuilt the VG30DETT motor into pushing close to 600hp. Well I know at this point my car is not yet as powerful. However, I'm curious to see what peoples opinion is on the VG30DETT motor vs the 7mgte in terms of reliability, power and torque potential etc.. This way I know what to say the next time he starts busting my balls about owning a supra.

It's a good motor. It has its ups and downs.

It's a v6... It will cost you twice as much to modify. You need "twin" everything.

Ask him how much money he's going to pitch in for you to move to his platform.

A V6 can not take the boost that an inline six can, not enough main bearings.
The VG30 is on the ragged edge at 600HP, but that is well inside the safe zone on a 7M, not to mention a 2JZ.

If you want to be twice as broke...

As SC said, two of everything. The motor isn't nearly as stout as a 7M let alone a 2J. Not to mention they're a bitch to work on.

I loved my Z32 twinturbo. It was a Stage III+ pushing around 400-450hp. Super fun car. Well built, great driving and handling car. They have their positivies and negatives. Z is not to expensive to upgrade, but you better hope something doesn't break!

I think a Z32 is definately nicer than an MK3, but the MK3 is cheaper, easier to work on, and has something the Z doesn't have. A back seat!

thats crazy cause my friend has 2 of them and ever since ive had my supra he wants to sell them and buy a supra haha...hes always having problems with them and he takes care of his cars...the engine bay is hella tight just like (anothermk3) said...plus there hella small on the inside...and i dont like all those guages they have my the steering wheel...i think the supra interior design and exterior is far superior...plus we have the 7m 1jz 2jz to choose to swap in our cars....idk its your money but id stay with a supra i hate the front headlights on the 300zs.... : (

the inline six sounds beautiful
smaller and that makes it easier to work on
is stronger
is cheaper
I think the z32 trans is crap
BPU 1jz VS BPU VG30DETT I smoke my coworker every time. I helped him swap it in, it was a joke working on any thing because of the 5mm in between the engine and bay. It took a wile to figure out the VG30DET gas emissions systems

Its not an opinion. Lamborghini used the 300zx headlights on their later model Diablo's.

From Wiki

"Diablo VT and VT Roadster

1999 Diablo VT RoadsterThe second version of the VT coupé and roadster added mostly cosmetic and styling changes. The cars now featured the SV's exposed headlamps (borrowed from the Nissan 300ZX 1990-96, and used under license), new wheels and a newly redesigned dashboard."

i'm in the same boat. all my friends are Z guys and i have a supra. there is a video on here with a 300zx with a 2J swap that is done nicely. i joined twinturbo.net for fun and got instabashed for owning a supra. i told them hey at least i got z wheels. then they started bashing the motor and shyt. needless to say i commented back and pissed them all off. any way here is a pic of my car with 300z wheels if you wanted to see what they look like.
