I bought a halfcut engine many years ago that had been repaired with DevconA.....

The Damper WASN'T coming off...

halfcut?

Could Devcon A be used to fill the gap between the key and the damaged side of the keyway...maybe?
how about Devcon's Titanium putty?

It's a stretch but I didn't expect anyone, especially you, to mention putty. However I do realize there's a difference between using it as an adhesive to weld the pulley to the crank, versus using it as a filler.

...putting what I'd like to say aside... Your right... its not a good suggestion which I believe I made fairly clear.. however... in an emergency situation... you do what you have to do... some people dont have the time or money to "just pull the crank and have it fixed properly" which is what I suggested.... dowling the crank is a common practice however for several different applications... so I dont quite get how that is "half assing" anything....

Anyways... good luck to the op with what ever they choose to do...

Welding would be possible and I think you warned me fairly well. I had forgot that the front plate will NOT come off without the dampener coming first though!

Thanks for the help and words of luck!

DevconA is the Ti one Fig, shit sets like glass, I think where the original repairer went wrong was to use it as an epoxy and glued the damper to the crank.

It was only slightly easier to remove than if it were welded, I destroyed a puller removing it.

The Beef I have with welding the damper on is the bonded outter, 80% of the time on original dampers the bond has failed to the point that the ring has slipped, welding it would ensure 100% then when it walks off the front you're stuck with a welded inner and no accessory drive.

I had an Opel Kadett that kept shearing flywheel bolts (all 6 at a time) I glued it all together with that stuff, bolts and all, never did come back apart:naughty:

the trick would be getting it on straight if the end of the crank and the balancer is all wallered out

LOL it's scarey just how strong a bond you get from that stuff!

I used the oxy torch, a pair of crow bars and a puller to get that damper off and killed the puller in the process!

yeah, the trick is making sure everything is super clean

I can't believe I'm almost advocating this repair for the kid and his crank but wth he's got nothing to lose

Same I've spent years here trying to educate and steer people away from the typical/classic Mk3 owners tightass way of botching even the simplest jobs and repairs but in this case as Fig has stated that this engine has a use buy date anyway I'd go for the Devcon and deal with it when it's time for the new engine to go in.

This isn't cool....

The crankshaft timing pulley has damage to the keyway as well!

WHY did that one get smooshed?

There is some wear damage when feeling the difference between where the dampaner pulley was touching the shaft, to the rest of the shaft...caused by the crankshaft wobbling, to confirm the damage suspicions stated earlier.

I'm going to replace my water pump soon, (now if i can get a good one), along with the two black seals that are on the oil pump shaft and the one that rubs the crank timing pulley. One or both seem to have let out some oil.

That is about the extent of what I plan to do. Timing belt looks ok...I don't know if I want to bother getting a new one but i'm tempted since i'm in there anyway.
