I have both in my driveway right now, they really don't look that similar. My Supra has 89+ tails on an 88 with the octagonal light spoiler. The middle section of the tails is painted to match the car. I love the way it looks.

I hate pre 89 tail lights I did like them at one ponit but it was a bad dream.I have them on my car but can't wait to get rid of them when i get 89+ I'll let all you guys who hate pre 89 tail lights come over and hit mine with a hammer
All of these strong opinions here. Whether u think they suck, or think they rock, 89+ or pre-89 it doesn't matter... they both look better smoked.*

I hate my tail lights - They are without a doubt the thing I hate the most about my car... that and the rust.
I'd have replaced them with 89+ lights in a heatbeat if I could get a set here cheap enough. Every euro spec car macks the pre 89 lights, no matter what year. Postage for a USDM is expensive, a JDM set is unjustifiably expensive, so I make do what I've got.

I hate most smoked tail lights they only look good on some cars.But thats just my opinion
I've had this very debate between the 2 styles of tails with myself. I hate tail lights that go all the way across. But I also hate the separated turn signals and reverse lights. I prefer the 3 lines in the turn signals and I don't like amber on either style tail. So I got the 89+, painted the center and removed the amber lense... now I am happy .

I like the 89+ as well don't get me wrong. But my car is an 88, I love my car, and there's very little aesthetics/looks-wise I wish to change. It's like a philosophical thing... why not change to a 93+ rear spoiler? Everyone has their preferences. If you're determined to change so many things about your car why not just get the car you want?
BTW: I had tinted tail lights before and it looked good I thought, but I prefer a nice clean stock looking set instead.

This is just a Photoshop. I did the tails this way on the supra I had about 10 years ago - but I don't have any pictures.
I used tinted clearcoat and carefully masked off the white stripes when I did it before. I plan on cutting out sections of the film being offered in the GB this time.

It seems some of the people who voted already have 89+ tails. Sort of throws off the value of the poll.
