So when i was adjusting my line pressure cable it got stuck, so I was wiggling it and pushed on it and it popped off the cam lever inside the trans.. So I had to pull the pan off, Got the cable hooked back up and decided to do a new filter and pan gasket while I was in there.. Changed the filter and put it back together.. After the job was done I had nothing else to do so decided to take the old filter apart to see how dirty it was.. I was surprised to find a completely clogged filter.. I am excited to find out what the new filter will do for my trans and shifting and driving performance.. The previous owner had the transmission rebuilt in 2004, I don't know what or why but I doubt the filter has been changed since then.. So for 17.99 for the filter and gasket from autozone (duralast part number TF147) and a few quarts of ATF its totally worth it.. Anyways this thread would be worthless without pics so here they are!

That looks almost as bad as my old 7M auto trans filter. The transmission is not sitting in the storage room, its dead burned the clutches out on that thing. Lost 3rd and 4th on the freeway.

The aftermath looked like this

Ended up swapping a A342 in from a Soarer, first thing we did before shimming it was change the filter haha.

Why "surprised"??

At best most of these cars will have been flushed and have never had a proper service, it's amazing any of them still work ;)

Don't forget to clean the magnets when you're in the pan, a low cost "Mod" is a Cruiser Pan and Filter Screen it add's a Qt of oil.

Thanks IJ, Yeah I cleaned the bottom of the pan and all the magnets! Nice and clean.. Im just curious if I will notice a difference in shifting at all with a not plugged filter..

Just drove the car with the new filter and fluid, It definitely goes into gear faster and has a firmer shift at WOT! Now I just need to fix the freeze plug that popped out :(

thinking about changing mine also. whenever i slow to make a turn and the speedo drops to 10mph, it always goes into first for a brief moment when i know it should easily accelerate from second. anyone have this happen to them?

mine does that except in second gear. it'll rev high for a moment and finally catch 3rd and go on.

what is your guys opinion on changing the trans filter and fluid on a high mileage car? i read that it can cause the trans to start to slip after all the gritty matter inside helping it shift is gone... i have 140K on mine

My car has 141,xxx on it but the trans was rebuilt in 04.. Its super easy to change the filter.. if you don't know its worth doing it anyways.. the filter from autozone comes with a new nitrile gasket too takes about 30-45 min to do it

i appreciate that, i can handle routine maintainance no problem. i was more curious to know if anyone else on this forum ever having the issue of first gear issue like me.
