Flush headlights (hear me out)

Okay so yeah, another one that wants flush headlights (no, I don't want the damn NSX flip ups or nothing like that, I want a style similar to those that LamaRossa used). I know I could just PM lama in a second and get it done with but I want to check if anyone else knew anything as well.

Aside from the H9's I think he got (read his post up about 1 hour before I went to watch pirates of the caribbean a while ago, it's really good), are there any other circular style lights that will light up well (really well, preferrably dead white) that I could get for a reasonable price. Also, aside from lama, has anybody else pulled of a great job at it like him with good results?

Just in case, I hope no one gets offended. I'm not tired of the flip ups, I just want something different and I'll just buy another MK3 as soon as I move and get a daily driver and leave it with the stock headlights.

Thanks in advance to all those who help (and I hope this thread doesn't get deleted :().

yup, just like that.... though I'd spray paint it black. Actually, what brand did lama use to paint the sheet metal? Just ordinary high temp enamel?

I would actually like to know what is it that the owner used to cover the sorroundings (the black border) and which route for the top cover is the best (and most economical). i know lama didn't use plastic.... he used something else.... and I doubt it was fiberglass.

I keep wondering if I could fit factory lights (from any car) into the little black grill next to the turn signal. Converting fromt he flip ups can be dangerous due to the angle of the glass/plastic of the cover piece. Once I get into the body work on my car I'm gonna look into OTHER options to get rid of the flip ups since I don't even like the way the flushmounts look.

On a side note, the NSX lights are extremely sexy looking, just rather expensive.

Ummmm I'd leave those little grill slits there, the car is starved for fresh outside air as it is, I used to wanna do some of these light things but I just happy with my xenon flip ups and xenon fogs and making HP, but good luck with your guys projects, maybe one will turn out cool and I'll change my mind ;)

I have to repeat a question I've posted before.

"Would you install brake pads made out of cardboard if they looked REALLY DAMN cool?"

That is basically what you are doing if you install fog or driving lights in place of actual headlights.

Headlights are designed to be your main beam. period!

Fog/driving lights are designed to be auxiliary beams. period!

For critical parts like this do it right or don't do it at all!

I don't care if your wing actually creates drag. I don't care if you have neon under your car. But when you risk killing people with your decisions then I have a problem.

You will not be able to control the light from fog/driving lights like you can with actual headlights. You will wind up either blinding oncoming traffic or not illuminating the road ahead adequately enough to avoid something dark in the road. Either way you are rolling the dice.

If you are not going to improve something like this then don't even attempt it.

There are options available to improve your lighting (hella h4 + a good bulb). There are also options available to do a custom headlight - the right way.

How many F'ing times to I have to make this same post?

Point well stated and it is correct.
The main beam is what is projected onto the road and produces the light you use to drive safely. A headlight retrofit of a low beam projector or other mainbeam is your best option. It takes time, some money and can require custom work but the result will be much better than using an auxillay beam.

Aux lights do not generate a good beam pattern for use of a main beam. The light is not controlled and typically glares onto to opposing traffic causing dangerous driving conditions for both parties.

Guys who have retrofitted HElla 90mm projector modules will agree that their output greatly improved and the beam cutoff pattern really works well and is safe to drive with and makes night driving much better.

You know something that might work is a set of Buel motorcycle head lamps. The problem is they are setup with a "top" and your light would be two low beams on the one side, and two high beams on the other, but I belive they would fit height wise for the most part, or only need a slight "bulge" to allow for beam clearance out the front.

Cool part is your using DOT approved motorcycle headlights, so the light should be pretty reasonable, and not blind other traffic.

Ok...... so, back to my questions :)

So, Hella 90mm's the ones I should be looking for then eh? Read up on Lama's conversion and saw they cost him $170 or so, sounds fair. Any place other than ebay that I can get them for a good price? Or should I just stick to finding them on ebay?

Also, ffs, could someone please explain to me what the black borders are? I'm quite sure they are probably the insulation or something, but I need to know what the material was.....

Aside from that, I read that there are different categories or something.... 5000k and 1000k and I don't know what else. Someone care to explain this in a simple way?

Btw, thanks for the help so far guys (and not deleting the thread :()

I know, I get commented on the damn lights all the time. It's just something I want differently on this current MK3. Like I already said, I'll be buying another one later on and I'm leaving it with the originals. It's just something I feel like doing, that's it.

I never thought I would get criticized as well for wanting flush's from my brotherly Supra owning companions :icon_conf

you will not find HID Hella 90mm modules for the $170 price. Heck... the low beam is over $500 per module (the high is over $600) and you need two. The $170 price is a little short too. http://www.rallylights.com/hella/90mm_modules.asp

If 90mm is too big for you you can try the 50mm ones but you can't get the high beams in halogen - http://www.rallylights.com/hella/50mm_modules.asp

These lenses are DOT/SAE approved and are actually being used on other cars.

I am not criticizing anyone for wanting to do flush headlights. I just don't want people to do a half-assed thing just because they think it "looks" cool.

Everyone is different. I love the pop-ups. Some people don't. God bless America!

Oh, I love the pop ups, I've just been wanting to try them for quite a while now. Since I'm re-doing the car for a "stylish-weekend" thing (as my g/f calls it), I thought it'd be a great idea.

Anything else other than the Hella's that are approved and are actually good? (Think I should re-read the lama thing again and check up on the details of the costs)
