Floor Pan Blues...

Okay, so there is this part of my floor pan that is rusted through just about 3 inches in front of where the elbow is of the center of the driveshaft. I wish I could provide a picture to show but I haven't a working digi cam. I was talking to a body shop today that said the floor pan section on our cars is actually part of the frame from what their computer was telling them, and that it may be a part of the car that...well...can't be fixed without compromising the stability of the vehicle, as they say it's made of High Strength steal. I'm lost. They are saying that if thats the case when they look at it that if thats the case then they wouldn't be willing to fix it because they wouldn't feel like trying to fix that is worth it and would provide risk that they wouldn't be liable for. My question is. basically should I just trash the frame for scrap metal or is there a trick to getting this fixed? Again the rust hole is about the size of a small fist, none of the rust continues outside of an inch from the hole itself and I have absolutly no water in the cab ever. Again it's also about three inches forward of the elbof on the Drive Shaft, on the driver side, just where the floor pans aims upwards to allow room for the Drive Shaft. Thanks in advance.

if it's just in the transmission/driveshaft tunnel then I would pull the carpet back and grind out the rust, then weld some sheet metal in the hole...spray some por-15 on it and call it a day...

I was hoping it would be something rather simple. but the way the body shop claims. The whole floor pan and all are part of the frame and there are basically some rods that go through the floor pan that hold the cars rigidity and all of the metal down there is high strength steel. and they claim that if its rusted through that they won't work on it because high strength steel can't be "patched" up like that and the rigidity of the car they can't fix and wouldn't want to put out a car they didn't feel was safe. I don't quite understand the shops thinking on this or if it's neccesarily true. Any insight?

Front and rear subframes. High strength steel can be welded, but the welding needs to be done by a competent welder using the right filler metal. Ideally the weld would be stress-relieved when done.

98% of body shops today will not touch rust....instead of telling you "no we won't touch your cars rust" they are feeding you a bowl of shit...good luck but removeing rust is a project that shops won't do because rust is cancer and they can't guarentee the work.

Keep hunting for shops and stay away from big company type places....find a small shop that looks like it's gonna go out of business and you may get lucky.
