4 estimates came in at $1,500-1,800. The highest being the local Toyota dealer's body shop, of course. One of those guys did say that he could actually do the repairs for about $800 cash. None of them seem able to get out of "insurance mode" when writing estimates. lol

I faxed the estimates to the trucking company, and they called me back, saying they were pretty sure the car wasn't worth $1,500, so they weren't going to pay up. Referring it to insurance.

If the insurance adjuster wants to come see the car, I'm going to have him visit one of those body shops with me. One of the shop- owners already offered to stand guard while the adjuster does his thing.

I think what this may come down to is arguing that the car is worth more than the insurance company's assigned value. I wonder if there's a valid, accepted argument in claiming higher value due to the 1JZ conversion- as though it's more collectible, etc.?

I don't think it would be worth going to court to force a fair settlement, due to the cost of lawyering up.

Fingers crossed for a reasonably satisfying outcome.

I guess? I didn't say anything that I wouldn't tell own kids. Take it as you will.

Sorry for getting ugly in my reply. That's not usually my style. I think what bothered me was that you basically addressed me in pretty much the same manner I'd expect someone to address their kids. It felt very much like you were talking down to me, especially the comment where you wondered what I'd do if something really bad happened. I mean, that almost seemed to imply that posting to a message board was some act of extreme desperation to begin with. And frankly, my original post did not give anyone here enough info about how I was handling the situation to pass judgment on how I'm handling it.

I'm satisfied to move on & let that die. I'll continue to update this thread as the settlement & repairs proceed.

The thought crossed my mind early on, but I had already gotten estimates for a new paint job. New paint job = $3,500, without the added damage. Add $5-600 for the added damage, and it's $4k. (Already got those estimates... $150 to rehab the wheel, $100 for the moulding, and $240-320 for labor to fix the fender) So even if they had coughed up the highest estimate of $1,800, I'd still be way short of the new paint job.

But still, in the grand scheme of things, I'm just glad he didn't run up & over me, or push me into the concrete barrier on the sde of the ramp, etc. Since I was already planning to have the car painted & had begun saving for it, I'm not overly hurt by the damage itself. Just annoyed that the run-in occurred at all, especially since I had specifically taken actions to make sure I was out of this guy's way. Once I was 3-4 car lengths past him, I thought I was out of the danger zone. Whoops! :: hommer ::

Had a feeling this would get ugly... Those estimates seem low to me as well.

Have you gotten your insurance involved? Usually they'll fight for you.

Not worth $1500? You might want to show the company some screen shots of the Supra's in the FS section with 1JZ's, especially the ones in good condition.

Yep, planning to print out a number of 1JZ sales from here & another forum to present to the adjuster. Just hoping that'll suffice.

The fact that its a 1jz probably doesn't matter. The will go with the vin. If it says n\a or a turbo that will determine the value of the car, and then of course the condition. Was it a ge or a gte originally? either way it should be worth more than $1500. In ok condition it should be worth at least 3000 In excellent $5500. But like poodles said let your insurance company handle it. from state to state laws very. In Texas party at fault should have to pay for your rental and for every day that you are out of a car. They won't let you know that. So bring that up to your insurance company and see what the laws are like in your state. Good luck.

kelly blue book value wont even value any car even with factory 1j at 5500$.

what it sells as a private party and what it is actually worth is a different story.

After a couple of weeks of runaround, the original "Safety Manager" I was dealing with was apparently either fired or reassigned. Got in touch with the company's new Safety Manager, and within 24 hours, they offered me $1,000 to settle the claim without getting insurance or lawyers involved.

If I weren't already planning a full respray of the car, this would not suffice. But since I can get the repairs done simultaneously with the respray for far less than the $1,500-1,800 estimates, I decided to take their offer.

I double checked with the shop I got my respray quote from to make sure the $1k would be enough. Plus, I have horrific luck in situations like this, so I figured I was better off not pressing my luck.

I'll be putting the settlement check into savings, then adding my tax refund and yearly bonus check from work. With any luck, the Supra will be undergoing its exterior rebirth by the end of March.

w00t!
