Well recently i have been doing alot of work on the supra, replaced the manifold gasket, coolant lines, and other random things,, finaly got the car running only to walk out to it one day to find oil EVERYWHERE around the car. :( so i got the car home, jacked it up, looked around, couldnt find oil leaking from anywhere. had the car running while jacked up a few drips of oil here and there falling off random parts that wouldnt have oil in them. spent several hours under the car and what not trying to find this leak, all while it was snowing/sleeting, wet and nasty out side. never found the leak, so i finaly got fed up with it and decided to take it to a shop to have them find the leak/ fix it while they had it because its my DD and i need it running.

So theres really only 2 shops in my town that i would go to, Maidas, or Toyota dealership... well Maidas has screwed me over ever single time i go there. they once charged me $65 for an oil change,, and i even had a free oil change ticket. that and they have stripped out 2 oil drain plugs causing oil leaks both times... So Maidas out of the question. that and they hate working on modded cars, mainly cause they dont understand what there looking at..

So i drive it over to the Toyota dealership, i'v delt with them in the past and their actualy really good so far from my experience. so i drop it off there, i told them its leaking oil some where and i just cant find where its coming from. they said they'd look at it and call back when they find it.. well they called back later that day. HERES THE BEST PART....the guy that was working on my car called and said, hey we've found your oil leak.. its 2 things. one is the oil dip stick tube wasnt seated into the hole properly and he simply put it back in for me, and 2 theres a oil tube/line running from the oil pan like under the support bar thats leaking oil and just needs replaced,, he said i'v noticed all the work you've done on that car, it looks great, and you'v done good work, then he said..

i know if you would have found the leak you would have fixed it, so just between you and me i dont want you to have to pay a couple hundred for us to fix these silly things for you, so when you come in i'll show you the leaky line and i'll just let you fix it on your own it'll only cost you about $10 and 10 mins of your time to do.... now how many mechanics out there do you know especialy from large dealerships that would do this for you and not just fix everything and charge you a ton of money? i was honestly very shocked at the fact that this mechanic was simply wanting to help me out.

And now he's just gained himself a potential future customer. Good on him.

As for this thread, it does not have anything technical about it really, so it should be in the General discussion forum ;).

He must be a fan of the car.

Havent had any of the mechanics that have touched my car do anything like that, they always say that they need to do a test drive for everything. ......ummm not without me your not.

That's awesome. Honest mechanics are hard to find. If that happened to me I'd almost feel bad not giving him money, lol.

I had one guy at a Honda specialty place spend ten minutes on the phone with me trying to diagnose an electrical problem with my old car. Never had anyone take a look at it in person and be so kind though.

Sounds like a great mechanic and I'd try to see him EVERY time you need any work done. Requesting his service all the time will bode well for him at the dealership too, I'm sure.

Of course there was the time when after an engine rebuild someone poured a quart of oil on the floor under the car to make it look like the engine was leaking. At the time it wasn't funny but looking back it always brings a chuckle...

That's great to here man. I've got a similar person here at Toyota of Kearney Mesa. This guy gives me good discounts on Supra parts.
For example, he got me FULL molding set for post 89 Supra for around $700 dollars and then some.

But yes, good and honest machanics are very hard to find now a days. I'm glad that you've found one too.

Like the Midas shop you described, most repair facilities have a policy of not working on "highly modified cars".
I know, because I worked as a mechanic for a few independent garages when I was younger.

In on shop in particular, I used to get in trouble all the time for taking in "weird cars". The school of thought seems to be that:
There is too much exposure to liability when working on a modified car due to safety and smog considerations, especially here in California which is notoriously litigious.

I gotta tell ya, Nate...

If I were in that situation...and a Toyota dealership technician would've been that honest with me, I'd say it would've been worthwhile to throw him 50 bones or...at least, 20, as a "tip". That's a huge thing for him to do.

Good to know there are still "some" out there that are honest. *sigh*
