First of all. How can one tell if someone is running lean or rich? just by the smell? I dont understand really. I dont really want to ask what could cause either because im sure the list would be long. i just want to understand what people are getting at when they say things like that. Examples of what can cause either would be good input but im just more interested in what it actually isand moreso... how do you know?

and second. I tested my AFM on the car and it failed the ohm/resistance/impedance tests from the TSRM terribly but I have not recieved any codes for that as an error. I got a 41 and 51 poppin all the time but imma wait on those till I can take the throttle body off/clean it/set TPS and troubleshoot from there.

How could I have a bad AFM and not get thrown codes for it? Maybe the comp is stopping its simple diagnosis at the 41 n 51 and when I fix them an AFM one will pop? I got a good one en route so im not too worried about it just wanna deepen my understanding my car.

Also what effects can a bad AFM have on your car?

Imma stop now cuz I tend to get too wordy with things. Thanks in advance to all who reply. Ill be back when I get off work to check up and repost.

Is this really that bad of a question or what? Or no good answers for it? Ive done somw research on it myself and not I understand the statement has to do with aif-fuel ratios during combustion.

I also understand how much the bad AFM can affect the mixture and such now. Still would appreciate info or maybe some good links to info on the subject.

So I am still wondering how does one know if they have too much air (lean), too much gas or the close to perfect amount during combustion? ... Anyone?

If your throwing codes the ECU goes into loop mode, or in other words really rich to prevent the engine from killing it self. Just buy a new AFM, lexus housing would be a big plus!

Sounds like you dont have a wideband, unless you are an experienced skilled tuner smell means nothing to you. Buy yourself an Innovate or AEM wideband.

With wrong air intake measurements, wouldn't the timing be ajusted incorrectly?

Yea thats along the lines of what Im thinking. Ive checked all timing and all the mechanical adjustments are correct. Like when piston 1 is @ TDC the crankshaft pulley is VERY close to 0 degrees and the cam pulleys marks are lined up evenly with the marks on the cover notches. I dont wanna get it perfect with a light until I get my AFM and clean and set the TPS.

Thanks guys at least im reassured that Im going in the right direction wit my tuning and adjustments.
