1.0 when i look at some of the build up pics i see that the plug wires mount right in the front of the head and i was wondering is it a pain in the *** to mount them else where?

1.1 what are the differences between the 7mge and the 7mgte i know the gte is boosted but are they essentially the same motor or is boosting a n/a with forged internals a no no? I'm wondering if there are any other differences then a turbo and non turbo?

and now that im shoping around for one i just want a '88+ with a targa and a 5 speed but is there anything else i should look for that mite save me some hassle later on down the road?

1.0 - You've got *A LOT* of learning to do.

1.1 - You've posted in the 1JZ/2JZ/Other Engine Tech forum.
Look up two spots on the list and you'll see 7M Tech forums.

1.2 - You're requesting an '88+. Just make sure you know that visually, the 1986.5 through 1988 MKIII Supras had similar body designs (Front bumper, Mirrors, tail lights, etc).

I'll assume you're referring to 89+ (89-92) which are the 3 piece taillights, curved mirrors and a "facelift" on the center part of the front bumper.

As for all your 7M questions...I'm going to be difficult and tell you to SEARCH.

Try this, and you'll be amazed how overwhelmed you'll be with information on 7M's. ;)

I'd pull the search card too, but I hate having threads lying around with active keywords in them that don't point you towards the right answer. And it's easier for me to type this out than explain how to search for it, so...

What was already mentioned, plus:
- higher compression pistons
- ECU
- AFM
- ingnition
- GTE has 2 knock sensors instead of one
- Transmission, clutch, differential gears

Lots of folks have turbo'd the NA. A really fantastic search term is "NA-T".

I'm guessing you want an N/A and then maybe turbo"ing" it later down the road? :dunno: I'm asking this because you said you just want a 5spd targa and asking about the differences between the GE/GTE. If this is the case, why don't you just get a GTE, it would save you the hassle. :icon_neut

Question on this. One diagram I've seen indicated that the two knock sensors on turbo models are two different ones.... the front one is specific to the GTE, and the rear one the same one used on NA's. Any truth to that, as even the EPC on Cygnus doesn't show them being different?

they're the same

The GT blocks have only one boss drilled and tapped, and the GTE has two.

Before machining, the blocks are 100% identicle. They just drill and tap holes in different spots.

FTFY. I know you know, I just don't want the new guy getting more confused.

Naw, it was good enough. It was a (apparently) mislabeled diagram about the two knock sensors being different which was throwing me, and I couldn't find any solid information on the subject. Thanks...

A word of advise, because knowledge is rather limited at this point. Don't fall victim to the JDM motor hype. Some advertise the 7MGTE motor swap like it is a plug and play deal. Don't waste the money on a "low mileage" motor. It's gonna be a low mileage motor that has sat in a junkyard for years. Just buy a used 7MGTE from around here and rebuild it, because you are gonna need to do that with any JDM you buy.

Your best bet is to buy what you want with a good motor already in it. Save any mechanicing you want to do for when that one breaks down.
