HG material and torque spec not updated...Toyota should have stepped up to the plate.

As far as people getting 100k mi. out of them. Not too many. Most people had problems far earlier than that.

My car has been in my family since the day it rolled off the showroom has always been properly maintained, and blew a HG at 38k mi. It has a metal head gasket now.

HG material was changed early in the 7M's production life but the torque spec wasn't updated to the correct spec for the new material used.

Right. I believe the previous material was asbestos, hence the change. The newer material wasnt defective, however it didnt receive the proper amount of torque

Wow the chance to get something free who woulda thought Mk3 guys would be all over this ;)

As a college student I am all over this. ;)

I firmly believe that being in college and paying 10 grand in tuition every year entitles me to a little "thriftiness".

I started all of this with my 89 white package... lol. The guy at the dealer called ME and told me he found a recall on the supra... lol.

They went all out on my car, and replaced a good portion of my A/C system. It blows like ice in that car. AMontgomery is now the owner of that car, and I'm sure he is thankful for the recall. The thing about that car is, the a/c worked before they fixed it. It just sucked in traffic and at low speeds because the expansion valve wasn't doing its job.

This is why our cars have a shitty rep and no-one wants to make parts for them, and why guys like Titan don't particularly want (so I hear) to work on them.

I've got an old 'Vette and people fawn over it, and it's pretty, but it's a shitbox to drive compared to a good Mkiii. The only reason it's worth anything is because they're aren't that many around anymore, but there was a time when it wasn't worth much. Monkey ass broke mofo's destroyed most of them and now they're worth something.

If the Mkiii was all of the sudden worth some dough (sigh), guys with some dough would own them and vois la! problem solved. I guess we have to wait until enough squids destroy most of what's left for this to happen.

Just don't seem right.

I have faith that one day, our cars will end up in a similar fashion as muscle cars have. Just try getting an older (70s) JDM/Japanese car. I highly highly doubt they will be anywhere remotely near as much as muscle cars have been, but nonetheless, eventually I feel enough competent people will own MkIIIs. Just look at the SM community and how far we've come in the past few years!

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm not going to bring it to the dealer to get the work done, I'm doing it myself because I'm cheap and there are VERY few people i trust to even touch my car...

Cheap? Nope, just happened to pertain to what I'm trying to get fixed...

yeah?

Might take mine in, cause my AC is hotter than my heater, haha...

At least you have a heater.... :3d_frown: Mine hasn't worked since I bought the car...lol. My A/C is on-and-off though, will blow cold for about 15 min. then warm up....so I'm thinkin' the system is low...might be this expansion valve....HA!

"That's been expired for a long time" I felt guilty for making techs do warranty work so i just hung up.

Sounds like someone has worked on the line himself.

I too dont have a heater. Previous owner told me he removed the heater core. I'm not sure why. Closer inspection shows that the hose fittings that go to it are still there, so it might be.

I'm by no means a cheap broke mk3 owner. as stated, my friend at the dealer called me and told me about it. My A/C worked before the work was done, and worked afterwards. I ACTUALLY had the described problem in the recall...

So my AC doesnt work all that great in my 89. I havnt checked the charge in it yet but I called the dealer and asked if they could check to see if my car had a recall and they told me to just give them the VIN. After I did that they called me back and said there was no recall on it..
Guess I gotta check it myself now.
