fast mods for the drag strip

I am picking up a 1987 supra 7mgte auto saturday. im planing on going from picking up the car to the track.(maybe not the best idea) i was trying to get as much as i could out of the car. How can I open her up in as little time as posible. I'm going to borrow a buddys boost gauge and controler for sat.
how high should take the boost up?
do i need change the timing?
what else can i do?

Brad, I'm not going to be able to let you do that.............You'll only tear it up before you get to enjoy it.
1: Buy the car.
2: Drive it to the meet.
3: After the meet, take it home and start routine maintenance on it.
4: After everything is replaced that needs to be replaced, you can start upgrading it.

You have no idea how well maintained the car is. As you have an auto, get a good tranny cooler for it or you'll toast it doing drag launches.

Destroying the car at the dragstip may be fun, but the track isn't going to like picking up the pieces and cleaning up the mess. Not to mention everyone being pissed off that you wasted their time... Getting a BHG or rod knock just because you didn't go over the car with a fine toothed comb and fixed stupid mistakes isn't exactly finacially sound.

YOU will be picking up the mess, and on top of that, Just make sure the car runs good, maintain it, save the money for the upgrades and take your * Time * it seems like you want to rush for quick power which ='s fail.

haha i went picking up pieces last time i took my last turbo straight to steel. i blew a motor mount and a power steering pump bracket. However, i had back on the track in about 20 min about the time it them to clean the track. It was a dodge shelby charger with a 2.2 turbo manual I got it down to 15.5 stock.
The track owner is cool about it. Its everyone else who will hate me.

off topic ? i dont know how much yall no about sti wrxs but if you do they have a fog light delete cover. do they make some thing like that for the pre 89 supra? I would love to find one before i paint my car(it needs it bad)

hmm thats funny, hes wanting to get to the strip ASAP, in my case ive had my car 5 years now.... with all the mods i have below, and im picky as hell about maintenance and ive still never had the car at the track and prob won't for another year or two...but to each his own I guess ::shrug::

seriously though, take everyones advice, they are telling you the honest truth. There is a chance you could make it without blowing something up, but why not give yourself the extra piece of mind knowing its running right first?

maybe thats why i missed i looked before i joined. I'm a big believer in the only way to find the weekest link is to break the chain. However ill take it easy saturday with the supra at least. The first day at the track is never a good idea however it would be fun. The supra will thank yall for talking me down.

Weakest link at the dragstrip is totally different than on the street.

On the street you might notice the tranny being weird, at the strip, it will just get destroyed.

It's kinda like people that don't stop driving when they get rod knock. The more you drive, the more damage it does until it fails completely destroying the block in most cases. All that metal through the engine usually ruins nearly everything else as well...

I can vouch for that, sadly I did blow my engine, it ran for about 15 seconds after it did, ( I was unsure of the issue ) and then shut it down immediately ( as soon as I saw it was RPM dependent.

The entire chain is a weak link without maintenance...

After you do maintenance and are confident in the car's ability to race, you may want to look into the drag racing section on here as it has some good tips, like unhooking the front sway at the track (don't forget to hook it back up before you leave!) to allow the weight of the car to transfer to the rear tires better, brake boosting, taking off right after the last green light is up, etc.

Our fuel pumps do not run off of 12 volts at all times. When you install an aftermarket fuel pump, such as a Walbro, it needs the constant 12 volts to work properly an to it's full potential.
