hey guys im planning on oing some modding on my 88 turbo here soon and im a little confused at what point to start putting on all the electronics that read and monitor your engine. the car is currently bone stock and i plan on putting the lexus afm and 550 injectors. of course intake and exhaust as well. ive read alot of posts on here and i keep hearing about widebands and safc's and maft pro. i undestand that maft pro is a tuning device for air fuel ratio i think? i dont know what safc is and i believe wideband is just a way to monitor egt and air fuel ratios? if someone could give a crash course on how this stuff works and at what point would i need to invest in them i would greatly appreciate it. just something short and to the point to get me in the right direction.

Theres a search button if you want to find out info from experts on this forum.(NO im not one of them)
basicly once you install your injectors and lexus afm youll also need to install your safc( thats your air /fuel tuneing device) and your wideband to monitor your afr's( thats your air fuel ratio readouts).
You obviously arent up to tuneing yourself so take it straight away to a reputable dyno shop in your area and get it tuned.
Id recomend trailering the car there after fitting the add ons rather than risk detonation or choking the highway with smoke....
Read and learn on this forum whenever you get a spare moment, we're very lucky to have some experts in various fields with alot of vital information regarding nearly every aspect of the supra and even the fluids we put into them.
cheers and have fun with your first basic bolt on's.

thanks for the reply. id have to check around to see if there is a dyno in my area i dont think there is. the only one i know of is where i work at and thats just a straight engine dyno for the engine we build. i can catch on quick to things if i read enough i was just having problems sorting out what does what. so the wideband monitors the afrs and the safc is used to adjust the afrs right? then all i would need to know is what the proper afr ratio is at idle and wot and then adjust with the safc right? i like to do things myself and this stuff seems so cool to be able to do so i would rather try to learn it.

7mgte's arent the easiest motors to tune, they take practise to get right. You'll want to aim for 14.7 or near the mark for idle and 11.0 -12.0 for wot, note these are just basic afr's as examples.
A afpr will be needed in most cases to get a better tune( air fuel pressure regulator.) as you may need to bump up or down your base fuel pressure to keep your ecu happy.Theres alot of info on this subject written by some very clever people, please search and youll find.

Hey thanks for all the input so I've been reading up on this stuff and from what I understand is that when I install the lexus afm and 550s in with an afpr I can tweak that to bring the afr to 14.7 at idle and the safc to set it at different rpms after I have the idle set? How would u set the afr to be at safe levels while ur driving and under wot. Maybe I'm getting to far ahead of myself

Ok well now I understand the basics now so when the first couple of mods go on I can then start to get technical with it. As long as I can keep it from running lean then I'll be able to figure it out as I go. Thanks for all the help guys

You will also need to upgrade your fuel pump (Walbro) to supply the fuel to those 550's. A boost controller, and an upgraded intercooler and piping will soon be on your list as well. A boost gauge that will read more than 8 pounds is not a necessity, but you will want it too. I started out just like you with the idea that 550's and a Lexus was a great upgrade. After all this, you will be ready for whatever turbo you want to throw at it, or just stay with the stock one. The bigger you go, you may have to go bigger on your injectors and possibly double up on the fuel pumps.

The problem with searching wideband is as soon as you type wideband in the search box, you get every build thread the site has to offer. In my thread, wideband never even gets mentioned until page 100 or so.

Try this thread out:

Thanks for the link but I have some others issues now before I start to mod. It wouldn't start today just kept cranking I'm getting 12v to the coil packs but my spark plugs are not firing at all. Coil packs could be bad. The copper plate ( I think its copper) that each coil is mounted on does it have nething to do with the coil pack operation. Cuz the holes that mount to the cam covers have rubber aroung both sides (inbetween the camm cover and the copper base) if the rubber is gone would that ground it out?

Yea I tested the resistance and its fine idk y I would be gettin 12v to the coil packs and no spark. To me that would mean replace the coil packs but idk.

you will not be able to tune closed loop operations, the safc is for WOT only. The ecu will take control of anything closed loop (idle and cruise). With a wideband and some open road you *could* tune yourself. Get a wideband that datalogs if you have the $$, well worth it.
