Fan Problems?

why is the fan on my supra is constantly on? I know it has a fan clutch that engages and disengages it at certain temps. But the fan clutch, all of the belts, and even the water pump are brand new. But it seems like my fan is ALWAYS fully engaged. I know that when the engine is cool, the fan clutch is disengaged to the point to where you could stop it with your hand.

but like i said, its always on, its freaking loud and annoying, and my car feels really sluggish because it has such a heavy load on the fan.

like i said, the fan clutch is new,
water pump and belts are new.
my car is never hot, its usually a quarter past cold.

my car sounds like an airplane, some one help me out, please.

It is not supposed to be that cold. It sounds like your thermostat is stuck open or you don't have a thermostat.

As a result the radiator is getting a full flow of coolant all the time. This makes the fan activate more the normal, so on a warm day it will appear to be on all the time.

Check the thermostat.

On a regular setup, fully hot car, holding 3000 rpm, you can see the fan deactivate after about 10-15 seconds.

having a thermostat stuck open will make a belt driven fan appear on all of the time?

well, heres the thing, when my dad and i rebuilt the damn motor with headgasket, i THINK, he wanted to use a thermostat that engages earlier, or at a lower temp, or something or other, to keep the engine cool.

i asked him and he said that has nothing to do with the fan clutch :1zhelp:

He's right about the thermostat having nothing directly to do with the fan clutch...a lower temp thermostat can delaying the coolant getting hot and pulling hot air over the clutch to cause it to function. Yours sounds like it needs a re-build or get a new one.

However, a lower temp thermostat will not make the engine run cooler...it just opens earlier and allows flow to the radiator. Just went over this here:

The fact it's new means squat. Sure it's the right model? Did a heavy duty clutch get put on? Say, like from a Tundra? Lots of people do that out of ignorance. You need to verify both the coolant T stat and what you have for a clutch. Then do as 935 said: with a hot engine raise rpm and watch/listen for the clutch to disengage. If it doesn't test it as per that tech article some jerk with too much free time wrote. If it fails the test open it up or replace it. And whatever you do don't be stickin' your fingers in there to stop it or we'll be calling you Lefty.
