First attempt: Catless with 10* timing
sm_photo_missing.jpg

Second attempt: Cat with 13* timing (changed to 13 in hopes of running less rich and getting a better test)

I've been recommended to drive until tank is 1/4th full, put in 2 bottles of heet, and fill with 87 octane fuel instead of 91. Since I am still at stock boost and been told it burns faster.

Contemplating replacing O2 sensor.. Cat is only a year old and probably has 1 month of use on it.

Save your money on the O2 sensor, you're car is running stoich and is in good fuel control. A/F at 15mph 14.643, and 25 mph 14.701. I presume the precat is gone on this car.

I would try fresh oil, a long high speed drive before the test, and avoid long idling time before the test. Put the timing back to stock.

Dude, for the cash your going to spend, just go to a family owned place in the more "poverty striken" areas with an extra benjamin XD where are you located? If your in Nor Cal and want to discuss it privately, I know people who can "help" you pass smog :D

Yeah precat is non-existent, I have a BIC ddp recirc to a tanabe catback all 3", possibly besides the actual cat..

I heard the O2 sensor should be replaced every other yr, I was thinking that was the case, it has never been replaced since my ownership 2 yrs ago. Anyways I actually JUST did an oil change a week before the test with castrol 5w30 semi synthetic and a new Toyota made in Japan filter that filters down to 8 microns IIRC.

I wouldn't say I got up to high speed on my way to the smog since its only a 5 min drive(50mph max for a couple seconds), but I got up to speed and slowed down giving it full throttle many times before I arrived. Enough to hear the "BWAAAHHHHH" for a solid couple of seconds each time.

I'll try the timing back to stock, but how would that help, just curious? Wouldn't that create more ppm?

Appreciate it Grim but it's only a matter of solving the issue and dropping another $50 and passing at this point rather than spend a hundred on an illegal one.

Who said anything about illegal? lolz ;) Yeah, I agree at this point, but in most cases ensuring a pass first time, bringing the extra cash just in case makes up for the multiple tests, and repairs, and assosciated time and bullshit.. but then again here in the 209 "friendly" smog shops are a dime a dozen lol good luck

If you're that close, I'd consider just cleaning or replacing spark plugs- that might do it.
Also, check your egr vavle as per the tsrm- they get clogged up after a while.
Not sure if switching to 87 will help, though it does burn faster.

You want a 30 minute drive to get the oil hot and drive out any fuel that has gotten in it. You also want time to purge the evap canister. A 5 minute drive is not going to do it. The car should pass with the factory timing with plenty of margin. If you have the precat, putting it back on will be an instant pass as my experience has shown it knocks things back by more than half. Oxygen sensors last a long time, the one on my car is original.

You will be surprise what an O2 sensor did for my car...

I was surprised on how much an O2 sensor could change the smog.

I used the DENSO brand O2 sensor....

The stock downpipe and elbow will fit where the BIC goes for the purposes of the test, unless he has something other than a CT26 flange.

My car is also a federal spec car and it passes the CA smog test. The main differences between a CA spec and Fed spec GTE are the additional anti-tamper/diagnostic sensors (sec. ox sensor and EGR temp sensor, along with ECU changes to support them).

Maybe all I need is a longer drive then.. Yesterday before my smog I installed new NGK Iridium BCPR6EP-N-8 plugs and gapped them accordingly to my application. Unfortunately the only closer to stock exhaust I have left are a tanabe DP with a stock elbow.

Side note: Check out my smog report 2 years ago with the same car with stock exhaust(pre-cat included) and same smog test only shop, notice how the max values have changed...(fuck CA)
sm_photo_missing.jpg

(would have passed if standards were same as below test)

and here's my last failed smog so you don't have to scroll up to compare:
sm_photo_missing.jpg

(15mph = 1693rpm 25mph = 2685rpm)

Edit:
I think I'm going to pay someone to pass. Even with a new O2 sensor and all tips and tricks given in this thread, I'm convinced it's impossible for me to pass with the new emission standards implemented unless I install another cat. The cost of buying another cat + gaskets and my time installing it at this point would be greater than just paying someone to pass and getting the retarded state of Naziforna off my back with all their late smog fees and re-tests.

Again FUCK CA!

Yup, the standards tightened this year, but not for all model years! See this post. http://www.supramania.com/forums/sh...ission-specs&p=1741929&viewfull=1#post1741929

To bad the state cancelled the "test only" consumer assistance program. That would have given you an easy $500 to fix your car.

Now, the only way to qualify is under the Income Eligible status if your total household income is at or below 185% of the federal poverty level . This translates to approximately $46,463 a year for a family of four. If you live alone you must not make more then $22,937 a year or $1,914 a month.

Through the CAP program the State will pay the CAP repair shop you choose up to $500.00 dollars for repair work performed on your vehicle. You may contact the BAR at (800) 952-5210 for an application. See http://www.smogtips.com/consumer_assistance.cfm

You don't need a new ox sensor, your car is in fuel control.

Ah nice, I do qualify, but I don't trust shops to work on my car anymore. I don't want to have to keep switching exhaust setups every 2yrs just for smog either. My neighbor has a friend that smogs and he offered to pass me. I'm going to talk to him tomorrow and set up a deal.

Appreciate all the help :)
