Hi,
Need some suspension advice. Failed my inspection today :( and they said that my lower ball joints and upper control arms were loose as a goose.

Since I know just enough to swap out springs / shocks.. I need to get new ball joints, but for the control arms, do I just replace those bushings, or do I have to replace the whole thing.

Any advise / knowledge is appreciated.

Thanks,
jamieC

Lower balljoint, you can just replace the balljoint, upper you need to replace the control arm. While your at the parts store, pick yourself up a pickle fork, and a BFH if you dont already have one. A pickle fork looks like a tuning fork, wedge it in between the ball joint and knuckle, then hammer on it. take the castle nut almost all the way off but leave it on the end of the stud, so everything doesnt fall apart when you break it lose.

Lower ball joints were 68 a piece from oreilly auto... I went ahead and ordered them..

Upper control arms were 260 a piece from oreilly auto... I soiled myself. Is this about right?

thanks,

Looking at about $400 each from Toyota now.

You should find out if the bushings are trashed or if it is the ball joints before you buy new UCAs.

Try another inspection shop.
You should personally inspect the components to determine degree of wear. More than likely this shop is trying to have you agree to a service that provides higher margin for their business.

Hi,
Here is a inspection checklist of all the crap they make you go through every year or "optional" two year which cost $12.00 here in missouri.

http://www.mshp.dps.missouri.gov/MSHPWeb/Publications/OtherPublications/documents/SHP-494.pdf

As for the upper control arms I'm going to go ahead and replace them too. I figure after 21 years and 176k miles, they were probably due. Although the thought of the shop trying to make money off of me crossed my mind, they said they couldnt get the parts for me and they knew I would probably do it myself anyway. It's not like I just put brand new koni's and eibachs on.

thanks for everyones help.

When the hell do you actually have to replace the UCA anyways, maybe after an accident. They don't usually warp or anything without an accident. I'd start with the bushings first. Although I can't get UCA's in my area, did they just start remaking them again I wonder? two years ago I asked and none were to be found through any dealer, or dealership. Perhaps O'reily's is the diamond in the rough? lol
