Experiences with Ford diesel products?

As the title asks, does anyone have a 6.0 Ford Powerstroke diesel? My Chevy Suburban is a 2003 and is really starting to piss me off with the little crap that keeps going wrong.

I have been thinking of getting either an F-250 or Excursion with the 6.0. Just looking to see if anyone has any info on reliability or maintenance issues with these trucks.

I heard they had problems with the turbos on some models. But, it's a Ford! A good diesel to get would be a Dodge. The Cummins is a great engine, plus it's an Inline 6! :biglaugh:

the 6.0 is good stock. increase the boost, and they are known to lift the heads. DONT buy a dodge, they have horrible suspention problems. I had a 7.3 powerstroke with a programer and intake, truck wasnt FAST, but it wasnt very slow!

Yeah, I thought about the Dodge and I like the Cummins, but I'm still thinking along the lines of the fully enclosed Excursion. I could throw a topper on the F-250 or Ram 2500, but I sometimes like having the third row for people hauling.

I also don't need it to be fast, but I've spent a lot of time looking at Edge, Banks Power, BD Diesel, and Bully Dog and there are lots of options for diesel truck tuning. CK, did you have any issues with your truck mx wise?

Every ambulance I've driven has been a Ford. The Powerstrokes are just about indestructible. Where I work now we trade them out before 60k miles, but the other places I've worked it was not unusual to see 200K+ on the motors. In other words I'd strongly recommend.

If you want a Cummins get the older 5.9L model and not the newer shitty 6.7L or whatever it is. BUT since you obviously want a Ford I will say that a good friend of mine has a 2006 with intake, full turbo back 4" exhaust, and chipped and the only issue hes had so far is the tranny being a little weak with the chip in. This problem would be pretty expected though once you start running aftermarket chips etc. Overall though its an awesome truck and it hauls ass even stock. It was his truck that we took when I bought my supra and without the ship he was hitting about 37PSI of boost.

Trust me, I'm not really partial to one or the other, just whatever is going to work best for me. I wish Dodge had a full size rig with the 5.9, but they don't. I have also seen the twin turbo setup for the 5.9 and it's pretty wicked!

I think the Excursion will work well for what I want it to do, I just wanted to know what to expect since I have never owned a Ford, much less their diesel products.

6.0 powerjoke is a pile. Egr coolers blow gaskets, heads blow gaskets. Both make huge messes, with water in the oil, and vice versa. I see many of them getting injectors before 100k. My neighboring shop is "PowerStroke Specialists." They work on more "sick O's" then pretty much anything else. Chris(the owner) there is a Ford trained diesel specialist. It's interesting watching them pick the cab up off the frame(with a lift) to do head gaskets. There is no other way. Let see, cam sensors, oil pressure sensors(this one kills the truck), and leaking water separators, pre-pumps go out, killing the main fuel pump on the motor. There's probably a whole lot of other stuff I just can't think of now.

Get the 7.3 powerstroke(if you have to have a Ford). Less problems by far, and easier to work on. There's some decent programmers out there for them as well. The Cummins is by far the best motor, just to bad it's in a Dodge truck. They do have suspension and body issues.

Now, if you could get a Cummins in a Ford truck backed by an Allison trans....

what's up with dodge? I heard once that they had some frames that would bend if you loaded them heavy...or maybe they even cracked? I've forgotton.

Well, we do a lot of traveling throughout the year to some of my father-in-law's marathons and are routinely hauling 7-8 pax on some of the family trips. It also needs to haul the Supra around when we move and we also travel with two kids and three dogs (2 labs and a Great Dane). So most small SUV's don't fit the bill. I just wish Dodge would build a Cummins SUV. That would be sweet.

Oh, well...thanks for the info about the Powerstrokes. I need to see if Excursions with the 7.3 hold up very well.

The powerstroke isn't made by ford. International makes them at the plant in Huntsville. The 6.0's did have alot of problems. Turbo's gumm up, injector's fail..ect.... The 6.4 Twin Turbo's should have all the problems worked out. They have alot better injection, common rail fuel, Twins Turbo, not that variable vein crap....But you probubly dont want a 2008. If you get a used Turbo Diesel, Let me know, because I have Twin Turbo set ups for them that I would like to sell. Good Luck.

i know someone with a diesel excursion and he runs 13's all day long i know its not fast but its not exactly slow. and hes never had any problems with it either... truck is faasst for as big as it is.
