exhaust wrap

hey ya'll :)

Just had a question about exhaust wrap.

I've bought some wrap and i was going to wrap my exhaust manifold but i've heard that the stainless manifold may crack (ss321 if relevant). Reason for wrapping is my oil cooler lines run very close to #1 runner and i wanted to avoid having them burst. I've just been given a different option of wrapping the oil cooler lines rather than do the big mission of removing my turbo & manifold to wrap the manifold. This would be easier and i wouldn't have to spend over an hour removing my exhaust side lol.

Appreciate any opinions :)

ive never heard of stainless manifolds cracking because of wrap. ive wraped many aftermarket headers for small blocks, never had issue. i have a buddy that wrapped his ebay 7m manifold. he has 13000 miles on it- only problem is the manifold pulled the studs outta the head......problem from the weight of the exhaust wrap now that i think about it. but ill be wrapping my ebay piece also.

buy DEI spark plug heat jacketing. its aluminized on the outside, woven fiberglass inside. disconnect one end of the oil line and slide the jacket over it. they also sell larger jackets but may not fit over -10. last time, i had to split it down the stitching and zip tie it back around the Drain Hose. Oil feed lines, you can do successfully. just try to zip tie the hose itself so its not touching the manifold; leave an air gap. youll be ok!

funnily enough i just had that suggested on our local mailing list hehe... same stuff just by thermo tec instead :)
I"m thinking i may have to do it that way rather than heat wrap as the wrap is quite thick.

well, guess geniouses thinkin alike, even down-under! ive always had good luck w/ that wrap. DONT USE THE STAINLESS ZIP TIES! if you do, cut them so the ends are straight and then fold the ends over w/ pliers. those bastards will slice your arm wide open when you reach carelessly down there... ask me how i know :nono:

Don't know anything about cracking but exhaust wrap lends itself to trap moisture hence a higher chance of corrosion may occur.

^^^ Yep! I would have the manifold ceramic coated 1st before wrapping it. Same for the downpipe.

I've heard bad things from multiple sources about using header wrap on exhaust. Trapping the heat inside like that will oxidize the metal much faster than without (get that rust look going on) the wrap. Best to Jet-Hot/Cerami-Chrome (same thing) any exhaust components.

the cheap "ebay" manifolds crack. not on the welds but right next to them. none of the welds are back-gassed so they are oxidized during welding. there is tons of porosity and corrosion. its so bad that when it happens, the back side of the weld looks like a piece of lava rock. thats why their tubular manifolds are "ported".

heat wrap is only bad on ferrous materials. when used on Non-ferrous materials, its fine. i wouldnt bother using it on an exhaust since more often than not, the exhaust invariable drags and it rips the wrap. every car ive seen w/ wrapped DP's or exhausts has that problem.
