So I fnished putting back my GE after replacing the head gasket... The car was sitting for atleast 6 months... Anyways... so I'm driving it around the block for a few minutes... and I see a little bit of smoke coming out of the shifter area... I pull over in my house the exhaust manifold is red hot. I've never seen anything like that. So the question is: What would make my exchaust manifold glow red hot?????

I believe the most honest answer to his question is 'heat'. ;)

But in all seriousness, timing, fuel, clogged cat, could all be reasons for this. I wouldn't drive it until it's fixed though...

Burnt valve?
Clogged CAT?
Timing is off?

I see its NA so we can rule boost out of the equation ;)

Sam
lol yeah no boost... and theres no cat.. just a testpipie.. i'm thinking it could be the timing as well..

Possibly something causing it to run lean, which boosts your EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature) through the roof.
I thought if it ran rich thats when it would burn hotter? lean would mean not enough gas and too much air no>?

What grim said is absolutely correct, I'd say one of the most common of those is TIMING. Check yours or did you just tune the distributor by ear?
lol yeah mike i kinda gotta admit I did it by ear..i guess i have to fix the timing. i never learned how to use a timing gun.

yeah im not driving it now.. you said fuel.. i had the fuel sitting in the tank for a couple months... you think that would make it go bad?

Run open headers and see if it does it again, or for a less obnoxious fix try this fun little equation 0*@TDC+T1m1ng gun.
BTW, open headers would be to see if your cat is clogged.
i think your going to have to give me a break down of the mathematical equation.. i was never good at math.. fractions.. decibals.. etc. lol..

The timing gun is really simple. Connect it to the battery, and put the pickup over the #1 spark plug wire. Make sure the notch on the front main damper is visible - I tend to use a bit of white crayon, or liquid paper. Clean off the marks on the timing gear cover that show degrees. Jumper the diag block. Start then engine. The timing light will strobe, making the notch on the front main damper appear to be stationary. Adjust the CPS until that stationary mark is sitting at the correct place on the timing gear cover.

That's all there is to it.

Lean is hotter due to more air less fuel., A higher (leaner) air fuel ratio will raise EGT's

so if its running leaner as most of you guys have said... i have to adjust the timing.. with the distributer and the timing gun... I always hated the timing situation but it sounds like its very important..lol.. let's see how it goes tomorrow.. thanks guys!
