Exhaust gas in the coolant?

I have a 90 turbo with 90k on the clock. I was "burping" the system yesterday cause I replaced a faulty thermostat. I noticed while "burping" the system that the air pockets kept coming out even after the car has been on for 15-20min. So I immediately thought BHG. But the car doesn't sputter and drives fine. Sometimes I would see a rise in temp but nothing crazy. I took it to my buddies shop where they do emissions and tested for gas in the coolant. Well the Mcp's (i think it is) rose above 100. So he told me BHG. I'm stumped because the car drives and runs good. Doesn't sputter and it boosts no problem. Any suggestions?

You probably have the beginning of a BHG. Some signs are worse than others and sometimes the gasket is compromised in different places but it sounds like you have BHG.

It's one of the common failure modes of the 7M head gasket. You're getting compression into the water jacket. When they fail like this they tend to run fine and push coolant out of the overflow bottle all the time.

Remember that coolant becomes acidic when exposed to exhaust gasses. It's going to start slowly eating away at the water jacket.

Time to pop the head and put a MHG in.

7M's just about always run about a needle width below half on the factory temp gauge. They rarely move. If you see the needle changing a lot, something is wrong.

It just that the head gasket is weak inbetween a coolant jacket and the combustion chamber. Sounds like a BHG for sure.... just look at it as a time for upgrading.

That's exactly how my 7M acted when the head gasket failed, plus it would push coolant out of the overflow after turning the engine off CONSTANTLY! As well as coolant disappearing when boosting on the freeway, the temp gauge would then start to bounce around...when I pulled the head, it was obvious. I replaced with a stocker head gasket, and resurfaced the head. It's been fine since Jan. 06' and about 20k miles with an upgraded turbo, and 3" exhaust, at about 11psi. Made 296whp on the dyno.

So, if your power goals aren't huge, then I think a stock head gasket replacement would work fine for you...if you do it ALL properly and don't cut any corners.

edit: 5k posts! :]

I just placed the order for the greddy 1.5 MHG, ARP Studs, bosch water pump, gates timing belt and new gaskets and seals for the top end. My goal for this car is 400-450whp. But first and foremost is maintenance to the engine cause I dunno what the previous owner replaced and didn't replace. So a complete tune up is scheduled while I'm taking the head off as well as all the gaskets (turbo, mani's, valve covers etc...) Thanks for all the info and help!!

sooo? lol i had 250 in my coolant and i was still able to do powerskids and drives fine, just temp gets hot... my 6th cyc is only down 10psi

pull the head off now before you get corrosion on the head/block mate its only going to get worse
