Exhaust advice

Hey guys,

I've had an 86.5 MKIII since 2002, the prev owner put quite a loud exhaust on it. Its 2.5inch from the down pipe onwards then there is a big dual exhaust muffler on the end.

I am trying to make this car as quiet as possible without sacrificing too much performance. What would be the best approach?

Its been suggested to me by my brother that best would be to just change the muffler after the cat to a quieter type, will this suffice?

Put a resonator on it.

Does it have a resonator and a muffler at the back or just the muffler and a cat?

What muffler is on it?

I'm a newb when it comes to exhausts so I just looked at some before and after youtube vids on resonators and they don't seem to make cars quieter, just less "rattlely". I need this car to be much quiter than it is now, I'd even be happy if it was as quiet as stock. It doesn't seem resonators do this.

Resonators do make cars quieter. Its like a pre muffler that quiets it and make the tone better.

Besdies the 2 mufflers at the end what else is on the exhaust?

From what I can see, its just one pipe from the muffler to what I think is the cat then a pipe to the down pipe. thats it.

Ya. If you put any sort of muffler/resonator on there its going to quiet it down.

I am having good results using the American brand, Magnaflow. Exhaust sound is only noticable in the Supra, with the windows up, engine RPMs over 4K. The system my Supra has is 3inch from the turbo back, (with a cat), no resonator. I would suggest your brother may be correct. Another brand name you might consider is Tanabe Touring Medallion. Note: The Magnaflow on the Supra is the largest stainless, oval, 3 inch inlet/outlet, they offered at the time (2006). Back then the muffler alone, cost me 170 USD. I choose to have the offset tubing on the muffler, to aid with keeping the pipe bend angles as small as possible. Van

Another good option is the HKS Sport or Hi-Power Silent setup. Both nice and quiet.
