hmm,

you know there is this beautiful invention that just came out. It is called a telephone. You press the digits in a certain sequence and you are able to talk with someone, real time. Perhaps this "UPS" has a number which you can call?

They will more than likely still deliver it. As there process goes, your next step will be to inform your shipper that HE needs to make a claim. Only the shipper can do that. After he files that claim, they will send out someone to look at it. That's where it gets sticky, and you should pay attention to this.

Their official answer to almost every claim is to say that it had insufficient packaging. Keep all packing material that is with it, and it's up to you whether you add to it before they get there. They will deny the claim, hoping that it will be dropped, and the claim will never have to be paid. Have the shipper complain, and stay with the claim. If he is persistent they will sooner or later pay it. The claim will be paid to him, and you will have to get a refund or replacement out of him. Keep a good open communication with him, because all you have to go on is his word about getting the claim paid or not.

UPS is self insured! It is in their best interest to not pay a claim.

You have my permission to copy any of this and send it to the seler to let him know what to do, but I'd advise you not to send him the part about him being the only way you'll know.

It could be ANYTHING...

Could've fallen free of the packaging and one of the fins on the housing chipped or cracked

Could've fallen from the housing and damaged the input mount

Could've fallen out of its box, killed three employees and now they're just trying to decide who to sue... sender or receiver.

OR the package could have been damaged to the point where it was no longer serviceable and they're concerned that the contents may have been damaged and are awaiting the inspection of a superior and possibly the decision of the shipper. As the receiver they won't tell you much.

If the package really didn't have sufficient packaging, and that 100 pound pumpkin is able to move, it will find it's way out. The moving parts that the axles bolt to are similar to a wheel hub, and have studs that go thru the holes in the axles that a nut goes onto. They are probably easily bent if dropped. Those studs would also be the diffs best friend as it tries to find a way out of the box.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong on that. The studs may be on the axle side, I don't remember.

Getting the axles off of the diff once the bolts are off of it, is the hardest part of getting the thing out of your car. I've pulled several as I have parted cars out, but I've never installed one. I can lay under the car, and pull one in an hour or so depending on how difficult the axles want to be. Surely with a lift and air tools a shop can do it much easier.

Does anybody have any tips on getting the axles off of the diff? I've never looked at any type of instruction on doing it.

when i drove for fed-ex, if a package came down the line on its way to my truck damaged, we would open it and inspect it. if the box was crappy, we would repackage it. it sucks when people ship things in crappy boxes. if the package was glass or you could hear the broken moving parts, the manager would have to inspect the package and make the decision to attempt delivery or return to shipper.
hope this helps.

alright thanks, now the tracking says this:
DIRECTIONS TO THE RECEIVER'S LOCATION ARE NEEDED FOR DELIVERY. UPS IS ATTEMPTING TO OBTAIN THIS INFORMATION. / DELIVERY RESCHEDULED

That sounds to me like maybe the delivery address tag got ripped up maybe?
