I have a 1986.5 NA and I was checking out the exaust, and there appears to be two mufflers. there is a smaller one in the center of the car and then the one at the rear....

I was wondering why there are two, and my car is rather quiet so I was thinking i'd unbolt the rear muffler and take if off just to see what it would sound like.
So what can I do that might help my car's sound/performance?

I removed the secondary muffler on my first 7M, and replaced it with a custom (by the local muffler shop) bent pipe so that the exhaust still exited behind the car,
It sounded GREAT! But not to loud.
The forward muffler is like what US pig-iron guys refer to as a "Turbo" muffler.
It is not just a resonator.

so basically you just took off the muffler and replaced it with a pipe...just a pipe?

my muffler looks like it's just clamped on and i can unbolt it... i wonder if it will just slide off....

Yes sir.
I had a 2.5" pipe made up, and welded on the flange off my original muffler.

If you have a clamp-on muffler, it most likely a replacement.

well i knew they obvious but i asked because i was worried about metal warpage from the heat and constant pressure making it hard to put back on once i get it off.....

but i will admit to a rather silly question.... it just looks like it might come off and not go back on. but then again i forgot that tailpipe expanders exist...:icon_conf :biglaugh:
