Exaust question

I have a 1986.5 NA and I was checking out the exaust, and there appears to be two mufflers. there is a smaller one in the center of the car and then the one at the rear....

I was wondering why there are two, and my car is rather quiet so I was thinking i'd unbolt the rear muffler and take if off just to see what it would sound like.

BUT i didn't want to screw anything up...i know that backpressure and all that can effect the engine, and i was just curious if that second muffler is needed, what it will do without it, and what it will sound like without it, it's a no-name double tip...at least i couldn't see a brand. It doesn't look exensive and the records priced it at about 140 dollars i believe.

So what can I do that might help my car's sound/performance? What will taking it off do? I'd like to try it doday if i can in fact just slip it off - it looks like it's held on just by a U-clamp type thing and then the hanging mount.

The forward "muffler" is a resonator.

The rear one is the actual muffler.

Your catalytic convertors will give your motor all the backpressure it could ever want (or not want for that matter).

However removing them both will likely make the car sound pretty shitty.

Removing the resonator in the middle will make it a bit louder, but it will still sound good.

well that thing doesn't unbolt...and i read somewhere that removing it will make it sound crappy....

I was just wondering if it would sound good without the rearmost muffler, just a straight pipe or different exaust. is there any room for performance tuning in the muffler or is it just further up the line I.E. removing restrictions?

having no muffler will sound like shit.

Dish out some cash and go aftermarket!

2.5 inch mandrel bent piping and muffler all the way for n/a's!

Get rid of the secondary muffler all together and remove the baffle from the primary. It's a 50$ fix. You don't get better gas mileage..., you do get improved throttle responce and tone or depth. It's just my opinion and there is a reason it is free!

Man, my resonator was rattling like hell so I had it removed and replaced with a 2.25" pipe. Afterwards the exhaust note was a little louder but it made it sound raspy at lower rpms. If you want to make some changes to your exhaust i suggest you go aftermarket

I recently installed the HKS Sport Exhaust on my son's NA and it sounds great! I love it. It has 60mm piping and a stock looking oval muffler with dual outlets for the sleeper look. Plus it has the years of HKS R&D behind it.

If you decide to spend a few bucks and get a great sounding top quality cat back system, here is the HKS site to read about it. The really neat thing is you can click on a video here and actually hear it!

And here is where I bought one at reasonable price:

The HKS Sport exhaust is a little loader than stock. It has that stock dual tail pipe look. I didn't notice any improvement in performance when I used it.

That video sounded a lot loader than mine.

I just put a 2.5" Pacestter Cat-back on my NA a couple weeks ago. Very easy install and it definately sounds better than stock. Not real loud though, just a little better. Idle to 4K RPM sounds a lot better, not that much of a difference from stock above 4K RPM though.
