I also work with tires all day. Those low profiles are more of a pain then they are worth. You really can't tell if your tire is low because of the stiff sidewalls and they ride rough. I won't go any smaller than a 50 series tire on my cars.

Had one blow out on me @ 85ish mph.

It led to the destruction of my first black '85.

It's called a tire gauge. I check mine almost every time I drive the car. Also, they don't ride like shit with 40 series sidewalls. I can't speak for smaller sidewalls but mine are fine. It has a lot more to do with your suspension setup.

Yeah, was not a fun experience. I was just coming back from a dyno day in Hallandale, Florida. I was super happy bc I had just made a 12whp gain (n/a car) and my friend and I were so exhausted. She was driving for about 40 miles, and then we switched drivers. Not ten minutes after I started driving I came around this one wide turn at about 85 andthere was tire debris from a semi or dump truck in the lane. There was no way I could avoid it, so I hit it. The blowout happened a few miles down the road, just BAM and the car pulled hard to the left. I tried to steer it into the emergency lane, but she was having none of that.

Had to wait in the median for my ex to come out and bring me a spare tire. I deemed the car unsafe to drive after that, she started doglegging badly. I don't know what exactly got fucked up in the sus[ension, but it just wasn't worth fixing and I took her guts out and put them into my rolling chassis white '83.

That incident is one of the reasons I haven't been back over 100mph since then. I am deathly afraid of a blowout at that speed and not being able to control it. Doesn't help that no more H rated tires are made for us MK2 peeps :(

It is worse being a passenger in a vehicle when that happens.

My fiance was driving her Ford Explorer, I was in the passenger seat and we were traveling on a single lane country road through a rocky area (google "Canadian shield") at about 100km/h when the front right tire blew out. The truck immediately pulled to the right which caused the right side of the truck to go into the un-paved shoulder. My fiance corrected by steering back towards the road a little but because the road is elevated a little over the shoulder there is a lip when you get back to the pavement. This lip caused the truck to start fish tailing which was scary as hell at that speed when sitting in the passenger side especially when there are cars in the oncoming lane with no median between you. After swerving back and forth trying to correct it the truck ended up doing a 180 degree spin on 2 wheels and then hitting the cable guard rail on the driver side. This guard rail was just wood posts with aircraft cable running between the posts, I have no idea how it managed to hold the weight of the truck but it did. One of the post came out of the ground, hit the rough of the truck above the driver door then impailed through the back side window and out the hatch. After the truck stopped moving, I saw that on the other side of the guard rail was a 50 foot drop onto large rocks.

Neither of us were seriously injured, just some bruises. I remember my head touched the roof of the truck when it spun around.

The tire had blown a 2" diameter hole in the side wall and these were tires that had less than 5000kms on them. We ended up getting a settlement from Uniroyal (michellin) as they did not want to go to court.

Needless to say there is a reason I bought factory ferrari tires for my supra.

I've had two blow outs at freeways speeds, one one the rear of a 67 plymouth fury, its wasnt too bad at all, just the junk tires back in the day. The other was on the rear of a 70 ford F100 before I modied all the suspension, when it blew since it had no sway bars and big tires that corner just dropped and scared then hell out me but nothing weird happed till I got to the tire shop, when they guy took the tire off he yells over to me, why do you keep your pliers in you tires LOL evidently I had run over a set of pliers on the freeway, it flicked em up into the sidewall and into the tire for and instant blowout.
