I'm just thinking out loud on the forums, but just recently I started stripping down a bone stock Red N/A '91 for paint which is a actually going to be a bare metal restoration (recently started another thread related to this outside of the general section).
The question remains, I have every single tool I could want at my disposal, but if I'm putting all this work why not just go the extra mile and spray a color code I can appreciate such as 202 "Gloss Black" or 212 "Obsidian Black". While I can appreciate the 3E5 Super Red "Arrest Me Red", looking at even the best painted Red Supra makes feel apathetic or blah (e.g SupraMan72's 7M very well done, but 3E5 is so common). The other part is this the only car in the past five years I've actually gotten a ticket while driving.
How can I elude police with a moderately modified 1JZ or a obnoxiously loud SPT on exhaust on EJ55 Subie, but then get pulled over for no reason in a very quiet, supposedly low key 7M?
On the other hand, if I repaint the car 202 then I'll be creating more work for myself, which I'll be repainting every single nook and stripping every panel with the exception of the engine which would be mostly left alone until due for a rebuild/swap. The car will no longer have it's "original color code from the factory". I find that somewhat relevant since there aren't many MK3's in one piece still on the roads, I don't want to just start butchering one because it had flaking clear coat.
So, pros and cons:
Pros for Red
-Stays with original color
-Saves a good deal of time and effort of a color change
Cons for Red
-Attracts unwanted attention from others
-Very Common color choice for the MA70s/Red is boring to me
-Red Base for 3E5 is pricey
Pros for Black
-Will possibly be represent of what a MA70 is supposed to look
-Gloss Black is a timeless classic that remains relevant after more than 20 years, Clean OEM look
-I have an odd obsession about 202, 204, 206 Supras and miss owning one
Cons for Black
-Extra body work, will be spraying a good amount of material in trunk, passenger compartment, door jams, hatch glass hinge etc.
-Engine bay which already looks crappy will look like ass until the motor is pulled again
-Next owner will either be really thrilled or real pissed that the color was changed.
Anyone with input supporting either decision would be appreciated.
