Engine undercover, replacements

I took my engine undercover off and noticed that it is a flimsy plastic that doesn't full cover oil pans.

Does anyone know if they make a metal undercover that covers all the way up to the transmission? The roads around here aren't that great, and supras don't have much clearance... my other supra had a bad oil pan gasket, and I suspect something hit it, trying to help prevent this from happening again.

that undercover actually helps with the cooling of the engine. (i wish i had one.) http://www.supramania.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75209&highlight=undercover this thread is about possibly making one. i found this pretty useful. i hope it is to you as well. and as far as i know, know one makes an after market one.

I checked in the EPC and they're $164 retail, but that's an old price. I'm sure they're more now. Maybe a Toyota parts guy or someone who has bought one recently could chime in with the current price.

SupraRX7Nut could give it to ya.... I think he said list is in the $170's now. He just bought one (for a discount, he works for a local dealership).

yesterday I've ordered one, when translated to usd it is costing me 400usd (but i'm in europe)

Damn those OEM parts are expensive, better of with custom/sport aftermarket :/

it depends on the part.

For instance. Even the the orthodox pulley where cheaper. They were not damped. In that instance, it might be cheaper but more expensive in the long run.

Has anyone attempted sheet metal (aluminum or anything really) for the undertray?

I will be making a fiberglass one.. but will only fit my car ofcourse... :}

I was just offering some info in case you decided a fabbed up cover would be too much work. I have never seen an aftermarket version of the undercover. I reinforced mine w/ aluminiun strips @ the mounting points. Just got some flat aluminum stock and riveted it to those areas.

The first question is

what exactly will you do with the super heated air that is now trapped in the engine bay?

Toyota is not as silly as it might seem on the surface. They made the engein undercover that long for a reason.

I doubt it would chill there at the bottom. Heat rises.

I cant say I know what the design of the under tray looks like, since I never had one on this car and I didnt mess with it on the other Supra I long ago sold, but BMWs have trays longer than their engines that go to right about the transmission

have you actually paid attention to the design of the BMW underbodies?
Like Ferrari, they wind tunnel test all those passages to make a system of venturi's, vortex generators and air diffusers to get that air in and out.

Their undertrays, save for the M cars, have no holes in or out really. Theres enough gap for the steering components to move, but otherwise not much at all.

The M cars have all sorts of NACA ducts and such though.

Here's the new 3 series one, which is actually interchanegable between sedan, wagon, and coupe

Those little duct looking things in front on either side are temp sensors

That flap behind the middle is for oil changes. The oil filter is on top of the engine and is a cartridge type.

yes but my point is that they do wind tunnel testing to make sure it works. They do not (any car company really) arbitrarily design something and call it a day.

And unless someone here has access to a wind tunnel at a fairly inexpensive rate. It is not happening.

Actually my school has a supersonic one next door to the SAE garage.

Anyways I dont think you'd need a wind tunnel for something like this. Logic should work, or even a fan. Its not going to be used on a million dollar race car prototype, just as a DD. Rule of thumb is to have the flattest bottom you can; though I'm not sure what the top of the stocker looks like or how it manages air.

Regardless, again, its not for something hardcore serious, and even if it was, it wouldnt have nearly the impact as an exterior accessory would (like mirrors, wings, splitters, etc.) Hell I dont even have one and thats not why my car overheats after an hour (no heater core, plugged lines instead of rerouted)
