Engine Swap Selection...

I recently acquired a 1990 toyota supra non-turbo model that i would like to restore the body on (it has a little tiny bit of rust over the passenger rear wheel well) and make a Drag Racer/Daily Driver out of. So I've got a few questions about engine choices.

First, Which engine should i go with? Some things to keep in mind:
  • Will hold 550 RWHP, comfortably, with minimal modification (no larger bore or stroke).
  • The engine will not be a 1JZ.
  • I would like to do mid to low-11s, so the more torque I can obtain, the better.

Second, I would like it to be a Daily Driver, but its not a must. Will this car be able to be a Daily Driver in northern Illinois? for late spring, summer, and early Fall, or will gas become a major issue?

Third, Does anyone know if i need to run a cat on a 1990? I don't have to do emissions since its not required for this car in IL, as far as I know.

If i think of more i'll post about it.

Hmm. Well, the way I would approach this is to look for an engine that has high power output from the get go. If you don't want to go the 2J route, I'd recommend a Chevy conversion. You're not going to make this much power without modding, so you need to find an engine that will do it with the minimal amount of modding. If you use a Chevy LS1 with NO2, you should be able to get close to your power desires without TOO much extra work.

I'm not sure why you want to avoid 2J's, but that's your choice.

There's a lot more to consider than engine when trying to improve drag times. Tires, weight, transmission and rear, driver... There just isn't enough info here to go on.

oops, typo, editing first post.

Edit: I would like to be using a 2jz with an auto, since its already an automatic. However, I wonder if it will hold the power. I will also be removing most of the interior, probably only keeping the front half (less the carpet).

Researching the engine you want to be putting in your car is a good start.

That is the forum you will gather plenty of information from.

In short, yes a 2jz will handle 500 to the wheels, easily.

The real question you should be asking yourself, is can your wallet.

The 2jz is the easiest most cost effective engine to swap in for 600 HP. 2JZ's with 67+ mm turbos respond great and can make 500 WHP on 94 oct pump gas easily. Its rediculous how easy a 2j will make power, even over a 1j, you have to push a 1j pretty hard to make 500HP, it takes 22+ psi and water/ meth or race gas. A good running 2jz will do it with 15-18 psi on pump.

The last 2jz we tuned with a T67 made 380 HP at 10 psi, and 485 rwhp and 480 TQ at 16 psi, on pump gas.

An LS V8 or 1UZ are also great engines, and definatly have cool factor, but would requier a lot of custom work.
