On my 88 the starter was definatly in the way of removing the knock sensor. I loosened the two bolts that hold the barrel part on just enough to make a little extra room. If you loosen to much you will need to take your starter out completly to put it back together.

here is a picture of where my sensor was, you cant see it because it was behind the starter and when I unscrewed the sensor it backed right into the starter.

I'll be damned if I can figure out how anybody can get to the rear KS with the starter in unless you have quadruple jointed, skinny arms. Unless you fall in that category, you might have to do like me and pull the starter - did it twice. It's a PITA, and you will need a second and to start the threads on the top nut, but it is definitely doable with a few swear words.

You'll need a universal and about 2 feet or so of extensions. With the car up on jack stands, you will come in from under the tranny, on the driver's side. Look up and forward to find the bolt and put a 14mm wrench on the nut on the other side and leave it there so it doesn't turn. Loosen the bolt and then go do the bottom on from directly beneath the starter. This one is easy.

Or go find somebody with skinny ass arms and multiple elbows. :icon_bigg

just a reminder to NOT connect the shield to gnd @ both ends. in doing so you are creating a possible ground loop, making for more potential problems....
I somewhat agree only on the grounds of redundancy (no pun intended). I don't see any benefit by grounding on both ends and one end grounded should be sufficient. What is a ground loop?
