Engine Failure

Trying to expand my knowledge on how to prevent engine failure such as rod knock or spun bearings? Are these two related and what are the preventive measures? I've heard of a few 1JZ engines with spun bearings. In addition to keeping your oil changes with good quality oil filter @ every 3-5k mark and making sure you are running additional quart for insurance, what else can be done to prevent it? Can you please explain?

IDK if this is where I should post it but you can certainly move it at your discretion.

What you posted is the cheapest, easiest insurance against RK on any Supra engine...oil starvation can score a bearing in a heartbeat, with RK next.

Proper bearing clearance is a must...excessive clearance (above spec) will induce RK as well. A spun bearing is different than excessive clearance due to wear or scoring. With a spun bearing, the bearing has moved possibly blocking the oil feed. The damage due to a spun bearing is usually more extensive, especially to the crank journals.

They covered it all assuming your engines in good shape then make sure to change the oil and filter as needed and use good quality oil (I use AMSOIL synthetic because its worth the extra$$$$ in my opinion). Use good coolant and make sure it's in good shape, make sure you use your fan shroud or if using eletric fans keep them in good shape, good radiator cap to hold that pressure is vital too.

On a turbo supra use a turbo timer or manually let your car idle between 30 seconds and a minute or two after driving to allow cooler oil to get to the turbo to prevent coking which is less likely on synthetic oil but still a risk none the less.

all of the above. with turbo cars, i check the oil every week.. i think the alum race koyo radiators are priced very well for the piece of mind you get along with it

Been said before, but oil, oil, oil, oil and more oil.

Oh and keep checking your oil. ;) Keep changing it on time. Check your oil, check your oil and then after you've forgotten to check your oil for a week, go check your oil. ;) A goof filter, aka NOT Fram, will help too. I believe the best are PureONE, Mobil1, K&N, Wix and Napa Gold. I love my PureONE's. :hugs the filter:

...check your oil...

My rod bearings didn't like metal shavings in the oil. I guess it's bad for them or something.....

;)
Or your metal shavings didn't like being intact to the rod bearings and fled the scene to the oil pan?:naughty:
When I had rod knock, it was the oil pump that failed. Keeping extra oil in the crank case can cause oil airiation if it gets sloshed into the crank and create RK also.

A quart over full (top line on the dipstick) is nowhere NEAR the crank. The 7M pan has a good deal excess capacity before the oil level is high enough for the crank to become a factor.
