So I have a bare engine block from my car that has a crack in an odd place on it. It is completely machined, decked, etc, is it worth selling or is it scrap metal?

And here's what the block SHOULD look like:

Hmm emilio, that is the mount for the oil filter. That thickness is there for a reason.

What I want to know is how did you crack that thick part! that is AMAZING! What did you use to install the oil pressure bypass? a 10 foot breaker bar?

well maybe get one of them remote oil filter locaters... block the supply the hole right under the place that was cracked... use only the return..the place that was cracked.. then use the feed under the filter houseing .. i think thats the right place.. but yea i might use that.. maybe some liquid steel on thread... reason im saying block the supply to filter as it would push against the housing trying to pull the fitting out of hole.. and then the pressure of the oil inside going to the engine.. so that would git rid of some of the pressure... but yes i prob would..

My guess is some genius has screwed a tapered pipe fitting in there at some stage.....

Early or late block?

Early - it's from an 88.

Correct - he ground it down to prevent further cracking.

I didn't do the cracking! The car came like that (as discovered in the first engine tear down). Any work down in that area was done by my engine builder.

It could be save by milling that area flat, drill & tap a few holes around the original hole, then adding a custom machined piece to replace the part that was broke out.
Doesn't appear to have enough threads to hold anything otherwise.

But unless you have an buddy who owns a machine shop, it would cost a bunch of coin.

If it was some POS tractor engine, you could braze in a replacement chunk,
I have seen crap like that done.

What a shame..........

The simple answer is to install the filter housing and try torquing it to spec. If it holds, it might be worth keeping. I'm saying this from the poor man's point of view. If you got a lot of money, then spend it.
