Really guys, I appreciate the responses. However I think some of these ideas are over kill. Anything comparable to a stock F-body or 'vette setup should be more than enough as i have a larger, aluminum radiator. Also, I plan on "ducting" the front of the radiator like you might see on a lot of race cars. So really I need a fan mostly for idling.

Like I said, JUNKYARD :D

You could use ebay as well, but you'll pay more...

Well, I can get a fan on EBay for about $35.00 shipped... Plus I have no idea where junkyards are around here. I'm at school in ND.

Are you talking about it storing the energy? Then in that case it's another transition and is even LESS efficent...

It stores energy during low loads. Including fans not running.

sorry to bring this back up but I was wondering if an electric fan setup provides enough cooling/performance over the oe clutch fan? I want to make sure my car is cooled well and the e-fans are cheaper than a new radiator and from what I've read free up some horses. what I'm wondering is would it b a worthwhile upgrade? Or would I be better off going with the bigger radiator?

You have no qualifiers for your question. The stock working fan clutch provides ample cooling for anything you throw at it.

No, the stock fan will outflow most electric fans and it won't free up power (increased draw on electrical system = alternator needs to work harder = increased load on engine)

Won't make any difference if the radiator is clogged either, so get the radiator and make sure you have a shroud and the fan clutch is working correctly...

i highly doubt the 80amp (iirc) alt. will handle hits of 50-60 amps from a decent cooling fan on start up and then 30-40 amps continous draw mixed with headlights, stereos etc...

It took two years plus to kill the original, o.e.m. alternator on my car with the Contour fans. Personally, I would recommend keeping the stock clutch fan.

For the person who said their clutch fan quit working, there's a write up by Jetjock on how to rebuild it, if you search around a bit. Pretty simple, and cheaper than buying and wiring fans. Buying a new clutch for the stock fan would be cheaper than the initial wiring, relays, switches, and fans to go electric, and easier, to.

With the Chevy motor, a high output alternator should be pretty cheap, if not factory installed.
