I just got a MK3 Supra 2 weeks ago and realized how dangerous the fan was since mine didn't come with the fan shroud. Not to mention the amount of power it robs, although I am not sure how much.

I was thinking of using an E-bay fan shroud that was built for the 7M radiator and bolts direct on, then using a microprocessor to kick on the fans on and off depending on the readings coming from the Temp sensor. Anyone have tried this?

No, but I have tried the Flex-a-Lite FLX-210 setup that has a built-in shround and an electric thermostat.
Long story short, I went back to OEM fan with clutch, and a brand new OEM shroud, which only cost $76.
You can't beat the OEM cooling fan.

Let's go through your post and tell you all the wrong and right information you have learned.

Stock fan dangerous with a shroud?

You are right, it can break fingers and other body parts if they should come in contact with it.

The Fan Clutch Robs Power?

This is wrong. It barely robs any horsepower, 1-2HP the most and that might even be too high. Have you ever seen 1000+ HP 2JZ? I have seen many of them and a majority are running the stock fan blade with the stock fan clutch. No issues at all.

Electric Fans with a microprocessor to read a temperature sender and then turn on a relay to power the fans?

Too many points for failure here.

Just look in the classified section and see if someone has a fan shroud for sale. If not, open a WTB thread in the "MKIII Wanted" section and wait for a response. This is the most reliable and trouble free way.

OEM electric fans are good but the Supra's electrical system was not designed for it. So you will need to put a Higher output alternator and maybe even a truck battery with his amps. When the fans kick on, they will pull a lot of amps to get up to speed. The best way to run electric fans on the Supra is have them spinning at about 35% or a little less and rise according to temperature to avoid the large electric load all at once.

All in all, buy a stock shroud and you will be more than happy and see if your fan clutch is in working order, so have resistance to when trying to turn it counter clockwise.

Any cheap efan usually is not even close to be half way up to the job of cooling the 7m.

Most fal fans arent up to the job.

You may gain the 1hp but you will lose with the alternator load that efans put on it.

Long story short for the 20-200 you spend on efans and a better alternator you could have just gotten yourself a shorud and been done with it with no worry.

just buy a new shroud. the only time its worth going to e-fans is with some aftermarket rads that are thicker and there isnt enough room for the stock fan.

It was the mishimoto. Seemed to happen on some cars but not all. Supposed to be getting fixed but idk how far along it is.

Im waiting for that or might just buy a koyo.

Ive got a shroud you can buy cheap, but shipping would be killer.

Efans are fine if the CFM is as high or higher than stock, and you have a reliable means of controlling them.

I had a PWR (biggest rad you can get for our cars to my knowledge) and a 7m with stock fan and shroud. Fits just fine. Won't fit with JZ and clutch fan setup though...

I'm using a efan from eBay now. Its a cheap one and by no means is it keeping my car cool :(
