I just got a MK3 Supra 2 weeks ago and realized how dangerous the fan was since mine didn't come with the fan shroud. Not to mention the amount of power it robs, although I am not sure how much.
I was thinking of using an E-bay fan shroud that was built for the 7M radiator and bolts direct on, then using a microprocessor to kick on the fans on and off depending on the readings coming from the Temp sensor. Anyone have tried this?
Let's go through your post and tell you all the wrong and right information you have learned.
Stock fan dangerous with a shroud?
You are right, it can break fingers and other body parts if they should come in contact with it.
The Fan Clutch Robs Power?
This is wrong. It barely robs any horsepower, 1-2HP the most and that might even be too high. Have you ever seen 1000+ HP 2JZ? I have seen many of them and a majority are running the stock fan blade with the stock fan clutch. No issues at all.
Electric Fans with a microprocessor to read a temperature sender and then turn on a relay to power the fans?
Too many points for failure here.
Just look in the classified section and see if someone has a fan shroud for sale. If not, open a WTB thread in the "MKIII Wanted" section and wait for a response. This is the most reliable and trouble free way.
OEM electric fans are good but the Supra's electrical system was not designed for it. So you will need to put a Higher output alternator and maybe even a truck battery with his amps. When the fans kick on, they will pull a lot of amps to get up to speed. The best way to run electric fans on the Supra is have them spinning at about 35% or a little less and rise according to temperature to avoid the large electric load all at once.
All in all, buy a stock shroud and you will be more than happy and see if your fan clutch is in working order, so have resistance to when trying to turn it counter clockwise.
