Electric car

Well I happen to live near a hydro electric plant and because of this my power bill is on average less than $10 a month with normal usage.

And because of that I was seriously considering buying an electric car, not for the environment, but for my own personal money savings.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone here knew of a good electric car (not a tesla, I don't have that kind of money) because a lot of the ones I've seen are limited to 25 mph. That's not really an option for me because I live in a rural area.

I was actually thinking about that poodles, because it seems like all the converted vehicles are just as good as the good electrics but are a lot less expensive...

I actually saw a converted BMW 2002 for sale for about 5k and thought about jumping on it.

Just recently hearing that the volt is going to be like 40k really makes me lean to converting.

Find a really light vehicle and convert it over to electric but be prepared to spend 5 to 10k for all the stuff. The batteries will run you around 2 to 5k and the motor will run about 1k to 10k.

The Volt is an extended range electric vehicle, which might explain some of the price.

If I was to drive an electric car I'd have to have one charging at home. That's why I'm looking forward to cars with electric motors and hydrogen fuel cells, that way I can actually go on a road trip with it.

If you don't drive that many miles a day, then I also agree with starting your own project.

To hear that someone did that to a 2002 makes me kinda sad, they're rare enough as it is without the tree huggers ruining them. Why not a 325 or something more common?

And that Volt is going to be expensive, as are most new Chevy products. Somebody's gotta pay that loan back...

On the subject of building your own though, I remember seeing at the Scottsdale Pavilions car show, an early 90s Toyota Tacoma that was fully electric... and running 9's. ;)

Yeah instead of getting an electric car I decided to go the opposite way and I bought a '53 Mercury Monterey...

nissan leaf?

Have you seen the print ads for those? I feel sorry for the guy who has to write those. Compared the Leaf's percentage of available torque at 1000rpm (100%) to a German sport sedan (~30%), something else, and a 'rugged v8 pickup truck' (~40%). What the ad doesn't mention is that said pickup truck makes more torque at 1000rpm than a Leaf could ever hope to make... sad.

Anyway, nice Merc! Would be in for more pictures... My brother has a Six-Fo Impala haha. I love his car. :)

Uhg, so in finally got a battery for it today (it has been converted to 12 volts) and tried to start it, but the starter button melted before the engine could catch, so something is clearly wrong.

Sounds like they ran the power for the starter right through the switch, rather than using a relay! Yikes!

Yeah maybe, I didn't have a lot of time to investigate besides checking for a fire and unhooking the battery. But my weekend starts today so I'll have some time to check it out.
