I am in the same boat. Easiest way to pull the EGR is to take off the upper intake manifold. I just finished cleaning all the ports (clogged) so I can get mine to pass.

It takes ten minutes if you DO NOT REMOVE INTAKE PLENUM!
Having just done this a few times the easiest was is using a Deep 12mm (or 10mm i can't remember which) and a 3" extension. Its trick but you CAN get the deep socket and extension on the nuts for the side on the heads. After which you then attatch the rachet. A hose might get in your way just push it away best you can. The ONLY thing you need to dissconnect is a couple vacuum lines and when you get the egr lose youll need to disconnect the vacuum modulator (the thing that attatches to the EGR directly above it).
Also, when all bolts are off (all 4). pull the end on the intake plenum TOWARDS the firewall first to get it lose, you won't beable to get it lose by just pulling the direction of the studs at first.
